Colorful Victorian with DIY Inspiration
from Living Etc

We love the look of colorful painted staircases, but don't love slipping down the stairs. We were totally smitten when we learned that the runner in this Victorian home was a DIY. This is the home of British textile designer Chrissie Probert Jones, who created the rainbow runner by sewing six IKEA rugs together.

The home is basically a white canvas with pops of color that come from the accessories. It's a great reminder to renters that you can still live in a colorful space, even if you can't paint! The key is to coordinate the colors so that the look doesn't feel random. Even though Chrissie has a lot of colors in this space, she's focused on shades of red — ranging from bright red to pale pinks.

Many of the textiles in the space come directly from Chrissie's textile company, Stitch Designworks. Her detached Victorian house was profiled on Living Etc, which has nearly a dozen additional photos of the colorful space.

about a year ago, i bought 10 cheap woven bath rugs from target, because i needed a cheap rug runner that would be exactly the size of the staircase in our duplex apartment. We needed this because my dog is afraid of wooden stairs! I adhered it with double-sided foam tape, but it doesn't stay very well with my dog's aggressive running on the stairs.

any suggestions on how to adhere, but easy enough to come off?

i love this idea, only takes a few hours to sew them all together with embroidery thread!

This is a great idea, but I would worry about having to clean the fabric. The IKEA rugs pictured are, I think, made of cotton, and cotton picks up dirt really easily. I love the look and considered it myself, but after thinking it over I went with a wool runner.

the boots and slippers may just be staging accessories. i consciously remind myself of that whenever looking at someone's home profile. sure it's very nice but they brought in a stager, then the magazine showed up with a staff stylist.
