Pssst. One of the more inspiring places we visited in Montreal was a restaurant. Part of the mystique of Le Club Chasse et Pche is that it's hidden away, marked only by a logo hanging outside.
The meal was everything we'd heard it would be, but we were taken by the interior's design, too. The cavernous interior is dim and cozy, with a subtle mix of rustic and minimalist styles...
Perimeter walls are a rough stone, interior partitions are painted black. The ceiling is black, too, with a repeated print of the club's logo. The floors are natural terra cotta tile. The shell of the restaurant is like a lodge in the woods. But modern touches like their geometric white dishes, tailored club chairs, and minimalist wall sconces add the twist that makes this place so interesting.
When it comes to decorating our own home's interior, we've always been a little "afraid of the dark", if you will. But our experience here taught us not to shy away from decorating with darks given the right circumstances.
It is one of my favorite restaurants in town. Food is wonderful and the service is great. The old stone walls and the space add warmth and charms. That is a key element of their design. I agree with your assessment that people must not be afraid of darker spaces.
I design my home around this principle because I could not fight the fact that I did not get a lot of sunlight inside my space during the day but mostly because I enjoy the mood darker colors create at night when I have guests over.
