Foam Dome Homes!
Pink Tentacle

Though Laure first posted the Japanese Dome Home around this time last year, some much better images have recently surfaced thanks to Pink Tentacle. Made from polystyrene foam, the modular pieces of these igloo-like homes create buildings that are super-insulated, inexpensive, lightweight, easily assembled, and extremely durable (being both earthquake and typhoon resistant).

Designed and distributed by the Japanese company International Dome House, the basic Dome House is 475 square feet of interior space. Once assembled, the polystyrene foam can be treated with mortar and paint and the basic interiors are personalized and decorated.

• This village of over 480 Dome Homes — Aso Farm Land resort village — is in Kyushu, Japan.
• This Dome Home is a bar...
• this Dome Home is a steam room...
• and this mushroom painted Dome Home houses a karaoke bar — imagine the acoustics in there!
• Dome Homes can be personalized — this white one has a few Spanish-style tiles!

Be certain to check out all the plans for the different variations of Dome Homes and the basic modular components at the International Dome House site — there's even a video showing the assembly process!

I have stayed in one of these domes and they are absolutely cute and totally cool! The spaces are nicely laid out because the domes are not that big. One word of advice...if you are planning to stay in one of these domes with another person, choose a partner that doesn't snore. Because of the dome shape, sound bounces off the walls really well and even if the snoring person is sleeping on another bed 10 feet away, you hear the snoring as if it's right next to your ear!

Reminds me of the Xanadu House of the Future in Kissimee, FL (right outside of Disney World), with the same type of construction. That house had a HUGE impact on me as a kid.
