Germain: Eye-Popping Interior by India Mahdavi

The new Parisian restaurant Germain was designed by India Mahdavi and its centerpiece is the oversized, faceted, yellow, and highheeled sculpture Sophie by Xavier Veilhan. Sophie lives in two spaces — the first level retro diner public restaurant and the second, a private VIP club.

It's eye-popping alright...but not in a good way.

I love the carpets and red lacquered panels in the VIP lounge
- but that's about it.

Eye-searing, or eye-blinding. Eye-popping is an understatement.

Love the idea of Sophie. Her size alone is already such a statement. I think they could have toned it down with the color. Did they think that no one would notice her otherwise?

This sort of reminds me of the scene in Disney's Alice in Wonderland, where Alice eats the wrong part of the mushroom or teacake or whatever and skyrockets through the house. Not sure how I feel about in real life, but it certainly makes a statement!

My first reaction: what is that thing in the middle, just floating there!? The angle of the photograph (and the sheer color of it) makes it look like it was superimposed via bad CGI. I mean, really. I can't even say if I do or don't like it, because my eye still can't even register it as actually in the picture. I keep thinking I should be hearing a voiceover announcing, "Stay tuned for When Photoshop Attacks, after these messages from our sponsors!"

What an amazing project! The use of the Sophie sculpture is totally unexpected, but incredibly cool. Great post.

It's an exciting space but it seems a bit "no rest for the weary." Funny scary.
