apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Horse Of A Different Color

The character of a noble horse adds an air of sophistication to an interior, but can sometimes contribute to the decidedly unmodern aesthetic of a space. These equine depictions add grace and humor to their respective rooms in all the right ways, and leave the kitsch of grandma's horse decor in the past where it belongs.

Tacky? Neigh.

how about commenting on the subject of the post rather than the length of the commentary...after all.."a picture is worth a THOUSAND words".....most of these images had a very comtemporary feeling especially the photographs which were stunning!

As a life-long horse person, I will tell you that horse people fall in to one of two categories. Those who decorate their ENTIRE house with horses and those who have next to no horse related decor, unless you count the pile of dirty saddle pads and blankets next to the washer.

When I got my fixer-upper I had plans for a few horsey photos and maybe one or two unexpected details that were horse related. That did not stop people from giving me every random horse thing that they came across. So if you know a person who owns and rides horses, for the love of god, do not give them a gift just because it has a horse on it, no matter how tasteful you think it is.

As another life-long horse person, I will say there can be a third type--those who know how to include a few horsey elements in their decor without going overboard. I think any of the photos above qualify as tasteful examples. I love most of these--if not the rooms themselves, then at least the horse art in them. And does anyone have a source for the bedding in the 4th photo? Love that, too.

Oh, but to echo MLH, I really feel like a lot of horse related items out there are a bit objectionable, and it's not safe to assume a horse lover will love anything with a horse on it. I see a lot of kitschy horse art or children's items with the horses' features out of proportion, dopey looking faces, exaggerated caricatures, etc., and these are exceptionally annoying when you know what the details are supposed to look like.

My friend painted a portrait of my horse after she died, and it's currently hanging above the fireplace. We also have a horseshoe from my horse hanging above the front door for good luck. I've still got my childhood collection of model horses and I've got a few of the nicer ones on the bookshelves in our office.

My mom, though, doesn't own anything without a horse on it. Bath towels, rain gauge, fox hunting paintings, sofa pillows. And she loves to buy things in hunter green and burgundy.

I have a few peices of hores art and photography I was thinking of displaying together on one smaller wall in our new apartment. I too am a horse person but I'm trying not to overdecorate with them. My fh received a massive horsehead ash tray from a friend that immediately went into thw "to donate to salvation army" pile.
