Inspiration: Richard Avedon's Book Crate Bed

11-10-08avedon.jpg

This image of photographer Richard Avedon's custom designed bed stopped us in our tracks this morning. Inspired by old water cooler crates and designed to provide as many books within arm's reach as possible, Avedon commissioned the structure from Brian Tolle and Jim Gratson. Though it was finally constructed of Mahogany, in its original form simple cardboard boxes were used, so the photographer could "play with the configuration"...

It would be so easy to pull this off at home; using something simple and inexpensive, like Ikea's Ivar pine box, found apple crates, even something more expensive, like Andrea Salvetti "Ortofrutta" box.

*drooling* I dream of being surrounded by books in my sleep. How lovely to wake up, roll over and pick any title without leaving the comfort of bed.

That's pretty much my bedroom after I moved in. Except it's all half-empty cardboard boxes instead of apple crates.

guess that bed wouldn't work for people who thrash around in their sleep

I would be scared to move... and at the moment I sleep alone. it's like a cage almost!

And I know that I am probably one of the poorer around ... but I am not sure why the IKEA box is seen as such a cheap thing. To create anything like the above construction, you would need around 20 boxes. that's $700. not that cheap IMO at all... I would prefer to buy "real" bookshelves for that!

Who could possibly make the bed surrounded by all that stuff - much less get any sleep?

It just looks cluttered and messy.

Not a fan of how this looks! I wouldn't be able to sleep being surrounded by all that clutter!

How many books do you really need within reach when you're in bed. Get a kindle!

Not related to the design of the bed (personally couldn't do that), but for those in DC, the Richard Avedon exhibit at the Corcoran is very good, I thought.

I don't like this at all and I can't understand anyone who does. I guess I just don't see this as substantially different than making it out of plastic milk crates. That can certainly be done, but that doesn't make it attractive. Apple crate things can have a home-y feel in small amounts, but this looks like someone ate all the apples and got too carried away with not discarding the crates once they had a few, like people who hoard POM glasses.

Also, if you're going to need that many books at arm's reach while you're still in bed, chances are you need to get out and take a walk around the block, meet your neighbors, see what the sky looks like.

Way too much clutter. Who could sleep in that? One wrong move, and the whole thing would be knocked over.

I like it. Makes the room look warm and inviting. Also love the idea of perusing my book collection from the confort of my bed.
