This design is a quick and cheap fix to create a separate space in a larger room of an apartment. Featured in this week's Time Out New York, the Lumen Box Room System design comes from architect Frederick Tang who created the multi-functional (and storage friendly) space for a client. The design is composed of off-the-shelf basics like IKEA's Expedit Shelves and corrugated plastic...
The client was a recently-divorced dad who wanted to make his two daughters their own space in his one-bedroom apartment. The unit is made of six Expedit shelves that are stacked three high and bolted together. The L-shape keeps the unit steady and entirely independent. Wrapped in corrugated plastic, the Lumens unit lets light pass (and produces an attractive glow) and provides tons of storage!

We like how the striped wall of the living room corresponds to the three stacked Expedit units. The architect kept the color scheme neutral and light to promote unity in the small space. There is a PDF of Frederick's plans and design process, with more photos. Check out the full article at Time Out New York: House call: Design-conscious dad.
