Making Old New Again: Creative Lampshade Frames

Old lampshades have wonderful bones. The sculptural steel frames are great for DIY craft and decorating projects — a simple coat of paint is sometimes all they need. The armature is also a great foundation for wrapping colored ribbon or even hanging decorations between the wires.

The first two images are called The Emporer's New Lamp and done by the design duo of Malin Palm and Åsa Ohlsson. The last two images are lampshade frames repurposed to be candle holders done by the Norwegian company Transplant.

Really liking this look these days! Love how the lamp armature pops in the first photo.

I've always loved lamps where the bulbs are visible... but EVERY time I have problems living with them. I want the light brighter, but then the bulb is too bright to look at. If I get one that's not blinding to the eyes, it ceases to give off enough light... :/ Great architectural look though with those old frames!

oooooh I love this too! I'm definitely going to have to keep my eye out for a DIY version!

Wow- weird. I JUST got 4 lampshade frames- they'll all be hanging in a cluster over my dining table. Beat me to the punch!

i know what you mean @cozylittlecave, but i've gotten around this problem by purchasing one of those edison light bulbs.. they are a little glarey, but not as much as a regular exposed bulb. One like this: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bplampsupply.com/images/products/lg/47088.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bplampsupply.com/product/404&usg=__fb5zacKrcflB8F2PwijX24W3tgY=&h=1122&w=600&sz=30&hl=en&start=32&um=1&tbnid=D9KzfbEzG4gXFM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=80&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dedison%2Bbulb%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D21%26um%3D1

More expensive, but more interesting imo.

Hope this helps.

anyone know where the black "mirror" is from in pic #1?

Some shades have great sculptural qualities. When paired w/an interesting bulb, they can make a great statement. I love #6 the most.

Yes, I am also coveting that 'mirror'

Looks like it's acrylic, maybe someone in your city can laser cut it for you?
