We're not sure whether it's the glossy pics, the edgy writing or the just plain HOT homes, but New York Mag's Home Design issue that came out last week is a must read for shelter junkies. It's even worth buying at the newstand, because the pics are so much nicer in print.
Put together by the incomparable Wendy Goodman, NYMag works with the theme, "The Secret City," and sets out to find those hidden gems that make your jaw drop when you come upon them. Our favorites? Henry Clay Frick's old rec room (bowling alley and pool hall) in the basement of the Frick, The cozy, modern townhouse in Greenwich Village by Matthew Baird, the amazing art collection in Adam Lindeman and Amalia Dayan's midtown apartment, and the stunning Peter Halley paintings in the bedroom at Gunter Sach's house, that was designed and built for Halston.
Here's the rundown:

I'm going to buy it, even though I really don't get a chance to look at all the magazines I already get.
BUT ... wouldn't it be fun if there were a way to subscribe to the HOME DESIGN issues ONLY of all the general interest magazines at once?
In other words ... your subscription would guarantee that you ONLY have to get the Home Design issue of Time Out New York AND New York Mag AND (let's say hypothetically, since it doesn't really exist this way) Newsweek, Time or Look.
That would be kind of fun.
Good tip. Picked up the issue and will rifle through it when I'm stuck on a plane in a few days.
That "Forever" photo reminds me of a feature that "Jane" magazine did on Lisa Marie (the model/actress), when Lisa was with Tim Burton. They had similar sofas... IIRC, twin mattress daybeds with lots of pillows... and he'd bought her a huge old casino sign that said "Lucky" in script, much like this one (she said that it was a symbol of her being "lucky in life, lucky in love").
It was less than a year before they broke up.
I'm surprised this issue has not raised the hackles of some ATers, since it is all a bigtime portrait of exclusive privilege and conspicuous consumption on our fair island...
I do really like that "forever" sign and would love to know where to find such a sign. I could also build one but in that case a bigger picture (more detailed) would be great. H E L P me !! ;)
