After breaking up with her boyfriend, this Norwegian girl, decided to paint her apartment black. When she moved in, the floor was a simple pine, and the walls were painted in pinks and blues. Drawing on inspiration from interior magazines and historic interiors, Monica Biering Hammer refurbished furniture inherited from her grandparents with paint and new upholstery. The bedroom (above) was added where the kitchen had been. The white pillows on the bed were chosen with the intention of breaking up the black.

So Chic - I love it!

I love how classy and serious everything is. I definitely would not have chosen pink for that ottoman but that is just personal taste.
The crown molding against the black walls is so elegant and beautiful. And the floors are great too.
It would be awesome to see some of those leather belt flooring tiles in this place.

Gorgeous, but I'm not sure I could live in it.

I love it. I dont think I could live there everyday. But I wouldnt mind visiting if I'm in a blue funk.

Simply beautiful =]

It's very regal, though it feels very stark. I can definitely appreciate how beautiful it is — but wouldn't ever do it to my home.

I really like it! But to LOOK at - not sure that I could LIVE in it day to day. She's done great editing with her pieces. Nice job...

I've always been a big fan of all white rooms. However . . . since I'm such a slob, maybe this all black would be a better choice. I love it!!

Heh, interesting. When I'm in a black mood, I actually try to put more cheerful elements in my home to try and pull me out of it. I don't think I'd EVER get of a funk, or get over a breakup, if I lived here! (although this IS a beautiful, beautiful home).

Gorgeous realization of a color scheme that has to be done just so -- beginning with good architectural bones and natural light -- to really fly. This one soars, baby.
Can't wait to see what Monica does when she falls in love again. Something like the set of a Jacques Demy film, I betcha.

Well, I'm not sure living in a BLACK apartment in a country with a serious lack of sunlight during the very long winter months would be good for my seasonal affective disorder or good for one's mental state as a whole.
That said: WOW. It certainly is dramatic and a statement.
Alas I would expect no less from the Norwegians who are well known for their love of Black Death Metal music (seriously) and for their dark humor.

is that the Arnolfini's mirror in the top of the bed?
lol.

funny... I have a really hard time living with white walls.
I love black. people seem to be harumphing lately that it's about time for the black wall trend to die. I hope that, rather than a short lived trend, black walls become just another option for people to consider. I LOVE them!

Perhaps in a climate where it was sunny most of the time this could be livable, but I can't imagine enjoying this apartment during the long, very grey Scandinavian winters.

Gorgeous!!
Not sure if I'd ever be brave enough to paint everything black, but it IS beautiful!

This is the interior of my dreams. I've always wanted black walls, and a chic, goth living space, but I never could picture any thing that comes close to this. It's so beautiful without being overbearing and morose.

I was prepared to hate it after reading about this drama queen Monica and her crimes against antiques, but this place is fabulous!
Wow!

Living in a dark northern city myself, I can appreciate the all-black look. An all-white daytime room just reinforces how little light there is. A glamorous nighttime interior takes the sting out of constant night -- it makes it seem fun rather than dreary.

This looks like an excellent place to write.
It looks historical, but still classic. I could absolutely live here. I agree with Lisa, in dreary cities sometimes a dark glam interior looks far better than a stark white one with no light.

I really love the use of mirrors. Particularly the one above the bed.
I agree that this could be a little much. I wonder if one could do one wall in a room in this dark color and then do the other walls in a lighter color? Or would that ruin the whole thing?

Elegant! I have alot of black but never thought of using black as the main color of a room. It's beautiful but I couldn't live with it .

I don't think I would make it through the winter.

Very well done. This apartment has great bones too - that certainly helps pull off a look like this.

looks like a nice place to turn a page and make a fresh start, if only you could forget about your ex in a black room.

Love it too, although I think I'd go the whole hog and paint the celings and trim black too. You can use furniture or art for a splash of colour, like in this place:

This is absolutely gorgeous - LOVE it!
and I still don't understand why people think having a dark-painted room in a place thats not sunny all the time is a bad thing - once you've got home from work and drawn the curtains you can't tell what its like outside anyway - just put a light on, people!
view Violetsrose's profile
I also love the way this looks! Unfortunately, I don't think it would work for me since the color seems to work with that gorgeous molding and high ceilings.

As much as I love the images - THE EXCESSIVE USE OF COMMAS IS DRIVING ME BATTY!
Please learn to use commas properly and in the correct placement. I beg you. It, makes me, read, each comma, as "comma" and, even though, you think you pause, you don't need, or want, a comma after every phrase.
Thank you.

And I'd totally live here.
