Fall Prints & Colors from Pattern Designer Samantha Hahn

We love checking out the work of pattern designers not just because we love new prints (which we do!), but because it's often a great way to predict upcoming color trends. We asked pattern designer and illustrator Samantha Hahn to tell us her predictions for fall trends and what her favorite color pairings are...

Samatha Hahn's Fall Predictions:
I think there will be an emphasis on the best elements of the past from bohemian opulence, to space age touches, to bold striking colors/prints from the 80's. We should see lots of metallics mixed in with a dreamy/groovy sunset hues.

Color Favorites
In designing my prints I'm always drawn to dreamy colors. I love pairing sorbet orange with creamy pinks and dusty turquoise. For the Printsource show however, I challenged myself to think autumn and winter so I snuck in rich plums, deep indigo, golden ochre — but of course I kept my signature peaches and persimmons in the mix.

Here's a list of places where you can pick up Samatha's work. We particularly love the journals that she did with Tyler Bender. See more of Samantha's work at her site. And we're huge fans of her blog! (Her blog introduced us to the Smokey the Bear posters!)

no disrespect but if we are speaking of trends bold prints are out. but if you love bold prints then the trends do not matter.

I have to say some of these remind me of the fabrics that were available in my home ed sewing class in the late 70's in the 7th or 8th grade. I tried to sew a tunic and failed, I think I sewed in backwards or something like that.

these fabric swatches kind of give me a headache, honestly. too much muchness. my eyes like to rest on design, to be able to gather it in. these feel a bit like a visual attack.

ha, good point Lori, similar pattern for me on a poorly fitting "shift" dress I made.

these will look dated again quickly, so it seems like only for use with an accent pillow...that is if you actually like any of these.

The middle three photos have great patterns on them, and colors!

The two ends though....DO NOT WANT!

Well there are too many displayed here all together, so the headache is probably inevitable. Not to mention that most of the patterns are so busy. However ... the bottom right pattern in the first picture is wonderfully reminiscent of Japanese stencil patterns. I think it must be the flow along the diagonal that does it.

Not gunna lie - I like these. Not all together...mind you. But a little singular dose here or there? Nothing wrong with that.

Keep in mind I was born in the 80's though, so I missed out on these prints the first time around.

I just love the kaleidoscopic effect in the last frames.. I want to crawl inside and see what lurks behind, be swirled up in the motion, solve the puzzle. Yes, this was explored in the seventies. Wondering if anyone else here is relieved to find fresh new versions of vintage ideas.... on clean new fabric rather than the mildewed bargain rack find?
