Simple Table Setting using MUJI

DSC_0063.jpg

We're still catching up with our favorite blogs from the holiday. And we found a beautiful table setting from one of our daily sources of inspiration 2 or 3 things I know. It's inexpensive and utilizes three things: MUJI, natural linen, and cheap tableware from Asian markets. Beautiful, accessible and easy!

The key to this idea is finding cheap, found, basic materials. Lee's favorite is MUJI scraps!

3 Essentials from 2 or 3 things I know

1. MUJI: I risk sharing this secret.
Ask store clerk for their trash bin of packing paper.
Pull it apart like an acordian. You'll see it makes insane patterns.
Cut paper into squares for a napkin detail and tie hardware
store bought twine around linen or a paper towel.
=Napkin

2. Grayline Fabrics on w. 39th.
Or go to any fabric store and buy
3yd of natural linen. Cut. Left overs for napkins.
1 yd of a linen and cut in a strip for a graphic table runner.
maybe a dropping of dried chamomile flowers in
the center of the table. something bright
to offset on the neutrals.
=Tablecloth

3. Pearl River Mart
Forget crate&barrel /BedBath
It's all about cheap dishware from asian markets.
Go for white ceramic square sushi plates and buy
Saki glasses.
=tableware

We're going to be cooking meals at home for the next few months and loved this suggestions for making the table a little more special. We're particularly excited to check out Grayline Fabrics. Thanks 2 or 3 Things!

Great ideas! Love that it looks nice and is cheap. I'll definitely keep it in mind for future use. :)

But it drives me nuts when people say "saki" instead of "sake." Wish the original author had paid a little more attention to how it's supposed to be pronounced. It's not that hard of a word!

Beuatiful composition. Love the neutral palette. What a great idea and perfect for the times. I am also a fan of 2 or 3 things blog. Thanks for sharing.

Fab linens. And Muji? Muji so needs to get its US online act together.

Why doesn't Muji love us the way we love Muji?
Why won't Muji let us buy?
Is it so wrong? Are we so ugly?

If you are buying plain white dinnerware, Pearl River Mart actually isn't that cheap. Surprisingly Crate & Barrel was as cheap if not cheaper for their plain whites, or if you have some patience and are in Manhattan, check out the restaurant supply and 'import/trading' stores along the lower portion of Bowery edging into Chinatown. I was able to nab some great deep plain white soupbowls for about $3-4 each, and saw really amazing choices for cheap (but oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe) dishware. The place with the best selection overall was Leader Trading Company @ 134 Bowery.

We hit up China Fair in Cambridge (Boston) for inexpensive white place settings. They usually have some fun shapes and patterns as well.
