One thousand days at sea. How do they do it? That's what we keep asking ourselves as we follow the 1000 Days at Sea of New York City couple Reid Stowe & Soanya Ahmad. The couple is living on Stowe's self-built sailboat, Schooner Anne, as they navigate the open sea for 1000 days with no port calls...
After departing three months ago from New York Harbor, they have posted a daily log here that provides an invigorating look at their daily happenings on board.
We're interested to see how day-to-day life plays out on the Schooner Anne. Domestic duties like window washing, cleaning the stove, doing the laundry, and growing a sprout garden are logged by Stowe and Ahmad in detail.
And talk about living green: Rainwater is being collected by tarps stretched over the deck, and a desalinator is used to turn sea water into drinking water. Solar panels are generating electricity for lighting and communications.
Stowe lived on the Schooner Anne in Chelsea for 10 years before moving the sailboat to Hoboken and now embarking on this thousand-day journey.

Oddly enough I've BEEN on this boat several times. My ex-boyfriend is also a sailor, one of a small enclave of (mostly) single guys living on their sail boats in the New York City harbour. Reid is an interesting guy, to say the least. You'd have to be to make a trip like this. But his boat Anne is INCREDIBLE. He built the entire 80ft (ish) sailboat himself, and the interior is all wood, laden with his own wonderful carvings. A real artist. There are small winding stairways, and tiny portals - it's a lot like a tree-house that floats.
It would be so interesting to do some sort of coverage on ALL the sailboats these guys call home, and how they make it work. I never knew until I was immersed in that world - but it's fascinating. Talk about city living in small spaces!! You guys have no idea..
