Architect Hugo Proença transformed this small 700 square foot apartment in Carcavelos, Portugal with the addition of tons of built-in storage (both open and closed), pale grey floors and a wall of mirrors.
Minimally furnished in the photographs, the apartment has a cohesion that helps it to appear larger than the 700 square feet — all white walls, the lack of trim, baseboards and moldings, and the unifying pale grey floors all work together. Too add to the cohesive nature, all the open storage is black and all the closed storage is white throughout the space.
In the mirrored hallway, there is a partially hidden pivoting mirrored door to the bathroom and reveals to those entering or leaving their reflected image.

Maybe it's because it's mostly empty, but it's like a well-appointed cage to me. I imagine an interested scientist lifting the roof to take a peek at the inhabitants.

a bit too sterile for me. lovely, but i think i may go mad after spending a weekend at home.

I love that bathroom, but where would the toothbrush(s), toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. go?

not into this at all

There's minimal and then there's just impractical and silly.

Gorgeous to look at, but I wouldn't want to live there. You have to admire (or at least respect) the discipline to live like that.

usually i assume that these photos were taken by the architectural firm that designed the space or staged for selling purposes. It certainly looks huge and spacious for 700 sq ft. i can only imagine no one lives here yet since i really can't imagine anyone living like this. its creepy to have a huge dining room table with one chair.

Wow, that IS minimal.

"Minimal", I get. But what's "smart" about this place? I defy any human to live in this prison for 24 hrs. w/out going insane.

So minimal! Love all of the small touches... the floating walls, the blinds that pull down out of the ceiling. AMAZING!!!

I find the consideration that goes into planning "open/closed" storage spaces, mirror reflections, etc...very interesting and obviously necessary to fully embrace this type of minimalism (and I say "type" bc there are so many different approaches to it, I think). I seems it would be extremely time consuming to live this way...like being on Weight Watchers, e.g. and thinking of food/points all the time.

the bedroom looks like a jail cell.

i'm a big fan of minimal but this is something else. it's a good start & i love all the storage space but i'd have to put up wall art, place plants, rugs, etc. to humanize it. i agree that as it stands, it looks like a jail cell or a deprivation space.

The white paneled walls and concrete floor make it look like an Apple store. While they're somewhat pretty to look at, I'm not sure I'd want to live in an Apple store.

Is this a joke? Minimal this is not. Insanity yes.

Of course it appears larger than 700 sq ft - there isn't anything in there! I agree with you slowdown, it's definitely got that laboratory vibe to it. *shudder*

Very cold and uninviting.

Disagreeing with the group. Love the spareness and that the space is completely unburdened by stuff. I understand how the austerity can be perceived as sterile and impersonal however IMHO demonstrates how living with less is both beautiful and freeing. I'm inspired to do sone purging.

clean and comfortable. i love the layout of the rooms even though the bathroom isn't quite directly connected to the bedroom. The black bookcases tie everything together in a very interesting way.
