Thoroughly Modern Needlepoint Pillows

Needlepoint has been revived by some very creative crafters and entrepreneurs alike. These days, folks are taking the intricate methods of old and applying them to challenging new pictures.

In the past, my only exposure to the method was at my grandmother's house, where she made scenes depicting Japanese ladies sitting around being beautiful, or bowls of perfect fruit glistening on fabric-covered tables. I was surprised by the allure of a roadkill scene pillow made by a friend and discovered many other modern designs to share.

Another AT reader had this link up in a comment a while back, she did Dita Von Teese. That takes skills!

Roadkill? Forget some fool thinking that's an appropriate pillow, the more pressing question is certainly, is AT really that desperate for design ideas?

this dead squirrel thing, not modern. in fact, none of these designs are modern.

The octopus and/or crab could work in a beach cottage, I suppose. The others are at best blah and at worst offensive. And as for the blogger's notion that roadkill has "allure" ... that's just plain sickening.

Oh come on, roadkill and naked ladies may be tacky, but are certainly more interesting than the blando patterns in the 2nd row...

Okay, so a squirrel I actually liked and fed was killed in front of my place a couple of days ago. I did not need to see that here. I come here as a respite from the stresses of every day life, and that was disgusting and offensive.

Oh, for the love of God.

Ninenteen67, I'm with you. I live in a heavily wooded area and it breaks my heart every time I see a squirrel that has been killed by a car.

Thanks Sally305.

That was my first post here, and I'm sorry it was so brusque.

The squirrel must appeal to those that like all that "morbid chic" crap (vampires and taxidermy, anyone??)

I like the octopus, I think it's cute and they are very smart & appealing creatures.

Come on people, get a sense of humor. This is not your precious pet squirrel that you feed nuts each day outside your window as bluebirds perch on your shoulder and the little bunnies hop by to snuggle your toes.

I love the reinvention of the needlepoint genre we're seeing here and I think it's thought-provoking and thoroughly delightful.

It's art!

The gruesome little squirrel and the naked woman are a blatant waste of craftsmanship and embroidery thread. Eeeew!

How is a dead squirrel thought-provoking and delightful?

These are all either boring or tacky, in my opinion.

Other than the octopus. :)

cmon, AT....I really, really, really could have done without seeing a dead squirrel captured in needlepoint. I find it upsetting & offensive.

Yeah I bet you like the octopus. It's mass produced and probably not even made by hand. Do you like Thomas Kinkaide too? He is the painter of light after all...never paints anything unpleasant. Oh to live in Thomas Kinkaide's world of warm cottages and happy squirrels...

Lenners, please. I don't feed "my" squirrels and chipmunks but I still see them every day and have an affinity for and attachment to them. This is something you obviously don't understand. There is plenty of art that is thought-provoking and delightful without offending anybody.

Yeah, you know what, Sally305? We should censor all offensive art! yeah! And then the thought police could come over for a potluck!

whether you like squirrels or not I just find this sad and such a waste of "craft" it seems angry to me but I guess that is the world we live in.

I will be sure to give my squirrels extra nuts tomorrow.

Lenners - this is also made by hand and not mass-produced. Is it appealing art too? http://www.regretsy.com/2009/10/05/fish-and-foul/
Give me a break.

(sally305 and nineteen67 - don't look at the link. seriously.)

If anyone's into DIY needlepoint, http://www.myphotostitch.com/ is great site to create unique patterns. A friend of mine used it to make a pattern that copied her wallpaper and made some really cute pillows.

How can a naked blond on a pillow be thought-provoking? How can a depiction of a bloody, dead squirrel on a throw pillow (of all things) be considered art? Both strike me as deeply unoriginal, puerile attempts to shock. Guess that makes me just another humorless, bourgeois prude.

I thought this was going to be an article about doing your own modern needlepoint pillows.

Take a look at Ehrman Designs:

I love some of the designs there, if only I had the time ...

I'm afraid an awful lot of those pillow designs fall under the heading of Trying Way, Way Too Hard. And wasn't roadkill chic old news, oh, five years ago anyway?

I do like the woodpecker, though -- and the crab.

poor squirrel.

Roadkill and naked chick... really ?

I kinda like the octopus, despite having somehow seen that design enverywhere lately...

I think that the "mass produced products vs. small companies" debate is not the problem here. Mass produced products can be tasteful sometimes, and we have that some of us put hours of work into art-less and even tact-less handmade things. Stardust made that point much better than I did.

Stardust, I think the regretsy "squirrel with a fish head" thing is pretty different in the sense that it's MADE OUT OF THE ACTUAL ANIMALS.

Whereas the pillow is made out of thread.

I love squirrels too. But sometimes squirrels die, it's a fact of life, of nature.

The real issue here is that the person who made the pillow is probably making it more as Art, than as decoration.

I am alarmed by the rise of the octopus in home design. I think they're spooky. Whenever I swim at the beach, I avoid rocky areas because I know that's where they hang out.

NOT a fan of the roadkill pillow cause it's not something I care to look at every day. Ditto the Playgirl pillow, which is tasteless.

I like all of that morbid crap... but this is just vile. I'm sorry that I even clicked "read more."

Also, Lenners- the squirrel pillow isn't art, it's craft. And there's no rule against hating art anyway.

THANK YOU apartment therapy for posting things that aren't always tasteful, boring or MCM.
I don't especially care for the dead squirrel pillow, but I can understand that some people would enjoy the contrast between a fussy, old lady craft and the repulsive, morbid image.
What I really enjoy is how indignant people get over this kind of post. Hilarious. And the link to the tapestry pattern company? EEEWWWW... now that's some old lady crap.

Actually, I've never heard of Thomas Kinkaide. I just like the octopus because I have an interest in cephalopods :)

I can see how that dead squirrel seems "edgy" or something, but I think its ugly. Besides, I like animals!
