In this House Beautiful article, designer Susan Ferrier used the painting of billowing clouds as her starting point for the entire home...

In order to evoke the same atmosphere as in the painting, Susan Ferrier worked with a limited color palette. Although this home is a show home, we think some of the techniques that Susan used could definitely apply to a more lived-in setting. In this particular condo, Susan was dealing with essentially just a white box. So she used dark color such as the brown on the living room sofas to create her own shadows, and draperies to redefine the space.
We have also always had a the best luck with choosing color when we work from an object that we love rather than making an abstract decision about what color to paint the wall. Have you ever used an object or piece of art as the starting point for choosing a color?

A little pet peeve of mine: if you are going to highlight a piece of art for an article or blog entry and talk about how important it is for whatever context - at least have the courtesy to mention the artist's name! I went to the original article and was relieved to see House Beautiful had in the first sentence said that the painting is by James McLaughlin Way.

Awful stools. If you're going to do animal legs, hyperrealism is NOT the way to go. They look positively dismembered, mutilated, taxidermied. Ugh.

Yeah...what's up with pointy things hanging above the bed?

Between the dismembered and velveted animals and the sweetly antiqued torture chamber anchors in the bedroom, this looks like the home of someone with a lot of repressed aggression.
I mean that even without considering her decision to build her entire home around a painting that looks like the eerie serenity of the calm before a particularly brutal storm.

The worst part of the stools is that the legs are buckling as though they can't withstand the weight of the sitter!

I would never put my tush on those creepy things.

I LOVE those stools. Sorry.

I also love the stools. They appear to be bracing for a quick run away from the approaching storm.

OMG the deer-leg stools are so awful! I can't even look at anything else in that picture.

The only thing I like about this home’s interior is the first stormy cloud painting. It’s quite beautiful but the rest I will pass on. Gotta love a blog that opens the door for a Varo reference…thanks for that Philip_Littel.

I adore the stools!!!

maybe the anchors were used to slaughter the goats used for the stools in some surrealist ritual.

I dunno. The art sort of blends into the background. But I bet it's an amazing space in person.

I don't usually go negative, so as to keep distance from the troll/hater/immature mentality that sadly surfaces even here, but those splayed deer leg seats are a horrifying abomination. I can't even connect to the rest of the post.

I love the gray and cream color scheme, and that painting is wonderful. But those ottomans are creeptastic.

i'm going to go out on a limb here (ew awful pun) but i think the stools are great. i wouldn't have them in my home but they are compelling somehow. i like how the limbs look a little awkward. i also like the contrast of the soft, plush upholstery with the rough, gangly looking legs. tres cool.

Regarding the first pic - I love the artwork and the colorway of the room. The stools *do* freak me out a bit - well, only the legs. It is just a tad too much eccentricity for me.

I like the stools and the painting.

When I realized what the legs on the stools were, I almost choked on my food. Maybe if they were wood or plastic, but looking so real...it makes me feel a little sick looking at them.

I cannot believe these incredibly negative comments! This space is fantastic. Why not save your scathing opinions for some of the truly awful homes posted by the readers (most of which are essentially craft projects gone horribly wrong) instead of bashing this one.

My only criticism is that things tend to be a bit too mix-matchy, especially with those dining chairs and pink lamps. Otherwise I think it's an incredibly surreal, mood-altering space with some truly interesting pieces, such as the much-maligned deer stools. This color palette is incredibly difficult to pull off well, so hats off to the designer.

I took one look at this picture and thought, boy, people are just going to leap on those stools (figuratively)...
Anyway, pulling colors from the artwork often works really well... I like it... but you can base a color scheme on any multicolored object that you love.
