My grandmother used to keep brightly-colored glass objects on her windowsills. I thought this collection, like so many of her other ones, was just an expression of her eccentricity. Mom filled me in on a little secret the glass was pretty, yes, but also an effective security device before the advent of alarm systems.

My collection of wooden cubes. I love them.

Various clear glass containers, each one holding a collection, of: corks, small smooth pebbles, small seashells, pearl necklaces in various shades/colors, marbles, little pine cones, and a lidded glass box filled w/pink sand from Bermuda and holding various small natural/other curiosities collected over the years ~ my favorite being a broken piece of porcelain china that was glinting in the sunlight behind Washington Mews in Greenwich Village many years ago; I couldn't resist looking to see what it was, and lo and behold: a monogrammed piece of china w/my exact initials!

ha! love the nailpolish.
i collect jones soda bottles and when empty, i fill them with water and add food coloring. i have a rainbow of them on my window sill and the colors are perfect against all the black and white photo labels.

slight correction on the textured white vases....they r hoBnail ( not hoPnail). many florists use inexpensive copies for arrangements but the collectible ones are by Fenton. the most common ones are white but they can be found in other colors even occasionally varigated.
i actually started a beautiful sea shell collection ( bought specimen shells, not unpolished ones found on the beach) in college that sat on my window sill until it got too large. they r all now in a shelved glass showcase in my family room.

Minerals! And one fossil, although I'm thinking of adding another. Although given yesterday's dust storm and the fact that my window was partially open at the time, they're looking slightly... orange. (Does anyone know how to dust minerals?)
Also, a small collection of cacti.

Bottles look so beautiful on a windowsill, almost like a DIY stained glass window. Here's my collection:
