Wowee zowee, who knew you could do so much in so little time with so little money. Here's a gift wrap project and a HUGELY improved bathroom. Head below the jump for all her pics, tools, and instructions and VOTING...

BEFORE
Tell us the tools and resources you used for the project:
The idea was to make my bathroom fit more with the retro black and yellow tiles in my rented apartment. I had too many colors going on. I used old picture frames and cut gift wrap from Groovy DC to fit the frames. I used a canvas shower curtain I already had, and a canvas "bin" I was using in my closet from Bed, Bath and Beyond. The only tools I needed were a ruler, scissors, pencil, hammer and nails.

MY TOOLS
Share step by step instructions for how you completed the project:
I cut black/white and yellowish green/grey/black paper and fit it into frames I already owned. I hung the new frames and removed a big framed poster. I replaced the shower curtain. I replaced the dark basket holding towels with a canvas bin.

DURING
I put some of the gift wrap behind the glass doors of my etagere to hide products. I slid some of the paper into the canvas bin where you can write what is in the bin. I replaced my maroon towels with yellow towels. I added a yellow star lamp that was taking up room in my closet.

AFTER
Nice ... but I have to say that the bin or box up on top looks a bit precarious!

why is the damask pattern running sideways?
view bgball's profile
Nice - much calmer and the artwork looks great, but please take that box down! It looks like it's about to fall and it's very distracting!

Great start, but I think the display on top of the cabinet needs some work. The before short was actually more visually pleasing.

So obviously you folks don't know design or coolness. This is BY-FAR the best cheap redesign I have seen yet. The colors, the clean look, the beauty. What I would give to brush my teeth in that room.
The dec0r8r knows good looks. And this room is GOOD LOOKIN'. Definitely 4 washtowels out of 5 in my book.
If you fools don't straighten up you need to suspend your comments.

Looked better before.

Wow, I moved from Capitol Hill to an apartment in a 1920s (or earlier) house in upstate NY and here, I have the exact same sink as you, in DC! Bizarro.

Man, where'd that little potted flower go? You replaced it with a star lamp? C'mon...
And while the white shower curtain does look better than the previous, it's still lacking... it actually looks like it's just a liner. I get making everything cleaner and streamlined by having it all white (and it does look awesome!), but I think a little something on the shower curtain would be better... or having a lighter weight shower curtain.
Oh.. and yeah, as others have said, that box doesn't fit on top of that shelf... so thus, it shouldn't be there.
But the new "art" and cabinet window coverings look great!

I like the lighter colored shower curtain and the wallpaper looks great both framed and in the etagere.

Amy, fake DCite (live in VA, work in DC) here. LOVE what you did with the bathroom. I love the paper you used and WISE chose to change out the shower curtain... I imagine it was pretty dark in there before!

excellent cheap project. I'm really impressed with your use of wrapping paper.
The photos make me homesick for my first apartment - the bathroom looked the same as yours.

While living in DC and bordering downtown Silver Spring, I went thru at least 4 different '20s-'40s apartments, and ALL of them had the SAME yellow/black/white tile combo, sink, and floorplan as yours. Ha!
I ditto the minus of the star, oversized bin and the re-addition of the small flower pot. Otherwise, great job!

decor ate her...I think anyone commenting here has the right to criticize as well as praise( within reason of course), and anyone posting their work should be open to both !

bgball. You are a jackarse. Do you even know what GOOD LOOKIN' is? Do you have a washtowel rating system? Do you have a degree in interior design from THE University of Phoenix?
I think the answer to all of these is a resounding "No!".
I know your game and I know your kind. The dec0r8r will not stand idly by while you drag his name through the mud.

Thanks for ALL your comments everyone. I agree that the bin is a bit large for the top, so I'll either turn it or get a smaller one.
And if you could see the dark yellow/maroon tiled floors and bright yellow/black tiled walls...well it's not pretty.
I just wanted to see how much I could change my bathroom with what I had at home. And yes the shower is not so dark anymore!

lol 'decor ate her'!

I like the changes quite a bit, however, I agree with sparkle that the potted plant deserves to be returned to its place and the star lamp should go. Then you'll have the complete clean and elegant look. And bonus - you'll have room to turn the bin to fit properly.

my bathroom is basically the 'pink' and black version of this one ( that 50's kinda pink, like pantyhose or foundation...)
I have the Debby Travis B @ W Damask showercurtain from a last year( Canadian Tire in canada..US?)I totally love it!!

I have that bathroom! The same sink, the same toilet, but instead of a tub I have a tiny horrible shower. My tile colors are identical too and I haven't known what to do with my tiny bathroom. It's a rent-controlled apartment at a great price and I'm stuck with it. I only lack the storage unit over the toilet. There's no place to store anything in there so I may try to squeeze one in like yours. I am inspired by what you've done here. I was thinking maybe a pale violet might go with the yellow tile, I'm so sick of the white paint on top. (I have yellow tile on the floor too.) But maybe a less dingy white would help me, yours looks good with the white paint.

A project in the 'hood!
Great job! And I love the star.

Great update / redo on the cheap!! Nice work.
I love how you managed to complement the original yellow and black tile (darling) rather than fight it as some people tend to do. the maroon curtain and basket WERE fighting it, as crisp lines go better with kitchy art deco tile styles! Well done you!
I usually hate over the toilet storage racks... but you make it look really nice.
I agree, the canvas bin either needs to be turned sideways, or exchange it for two smaller bins - that would likely be more handy anyway.
Not crazy about the star - but I don't live there so my opinion doesn't matter.
If the observations that the white shower curtain is too plain mean anything to you... you might consider sewing solid black panels/ lines - I'm thinking about 4 inches wide - to the top and bottom of the curtain. That might 'ground' the curtain nicely and help tie it in to the new theme.
I noticed your Damask curtain rings and I think that's a nice touch.
All in all... a great re-do for under $10. I challenge anyone to come up with a better plan for under $10. In fact - now THERE'S a contest!!

actually... the Curtain would be great with a 4 inch black border on top... and say... 8-10 inch border on the bottom to give it visual weight.
hmm.

Capitol Hill represent! :) I don't dig the star light, but I really do like what you've done with the rest--I agree, it's much calmer. It's nice to not have to look at the toiletries in the cabinet. Great idea.
My Capitol Hill bathroom is just black and white tile (and a tub that has basically lost all of its porcelain glazing...yuck).

GREAT JOB! It looks much bigger and very clean. I love the idea of covering the glass in the cabinet....there really is no way to make drugstore stuff look nice.
And the frames are a great idea, too :-)

For crazy's sake, lose the star and turn the container so it actually fits!!

Huh. I don't like the overhanging bin, and I think a shower curtain with a slight pattern might look better. Maybe one of those waffle weave ones to introduce some texture?

A much more soothing space. I think you did a really nice job.

shout out to DC. nice try hooking up the over the toilet cabinet. man those things are such an eyesore, but ur effort to fancy it up was not wasted. i like the star, but the bin is bulky.

I have a white bin that I got from Target that would fit perfectly in that spot on top of your cabinet. Never ever would have thought of framing wrapping paper as art. That is clever and will be easy enough to change if you get tired of it. A very nice redo on a miniscule budget.

I love beautiful things as much as the next person, but it seems terribly wasteful to replace a functional, clean and decent-looking shower curtain that suits the decor with one that's just a little different just to get a bit of texture in. I think the point was that the poster already had the curtain. I would agree with removing the star light, not because I think it's terrible (though it's not really my style), but because the dangerously placed container could be turned sideways and stabilized. Otherwise, it looks great. (And I'm not crazy about over-the-toilet shelves, either, but for those of us in small spaces, they're about the only option.) And I like that several small, cheap changes really improved the space tremendously. The bathroom in my new apartment was disgusting, and I feared it would never be bearable, let alone pleasant, but a coat of paint, new toilet paper hold and towel rack, a change of shower curtain, and the addition of one of those d--mned over-the-toilet shelves, plus some art, transformed the place for under $75. I really should have taken pictures.
On another note, I understand that patterned paper is a gerat way to give something a new look for very little money, and I've used it myself on shelves, trays and so on. But I'm beginning to get a bit bored with all the entries that depend on lining a shelf, bookcase, etc. with paper. Something else out there?
view pyewacket's profile
I think it is much better! The only thing that bothers me is that I feel like the bin is going to fall down. I love the clean new look!
view M. Patrizio's profile
love it! Can i just suggest that you take the pattern from the damask paper and make a nice big stencil for the shower curtain? A water-resistant craft paint in black would work and tie the whole look together nicely.

what a great idea to hide the "clutter" behind the windows with a cool and funky wrapping paper! I love it!
