Best Products: Hess Pie Plates

2004_9_17_hess1.jpgA few weeks ago we had a pie at a friend's house and what caught our attention (before the delicious eating part) was the pie plate. Simple, smooth and noticeably attractive we had to ask, "Where did you get that pie plate?"

It turned out to be a gift.

2004_9_17_hess2.jpgAfter calling up the giver and having her root around in her credit card reciept drawer ($26) we discovered Hess Pottery. Started in 1979 by Tom Hess, Hess Pottery is a remarkable, small-shop pottery company where one man's passion for perfecting his art has never stopped. Over 31 years, Tom Hess has experimented, fiddled with and improved his process of making and shaping his clay so that now people like mysef interrupt dinners to ask, "Where did you get that pie plate?" Happy pie season!

After years of perfecting pie crusts on Key Lime and (homegrown) Mango pies (not to mention multiple Thanksgivings), my Mom SWEARS by her Corningware pie plate, the all-white kind with a blue flower in the middle. I think the pattern name is "Blue Cornflower" or something like that, and think the only place to get them these days is on Ebay...

mmmm, pie!
