Good Questions: Narrow Kitchen Island?

2004_7_question mark.jpgDear AT,

I am searching for a kitchen island: standard height, but narrow, with a bottom shelf for storage of bulky items. Either wooden or stainless steel would do.

Can you please tell me where I can find one already fabricated as I cannot afford custom made storage.

Thank you, Lorraine

  • On the low end we're a big fan of Ikea's Varde line
  • And we also like stainless worktables from Bowery Kitchen Supply.
  • On the high end, John Boos is real nice and has many options.

    It's very nice in person.

I made a kitchen island for my tiny (10 x 17!) studio out of two 12" deep x 24" wide kitchen cabinets, 39" high. They are fixed to a plinth screwed to the floor (you do have to have stability, especially if you are having an overhanging work surface to use as an eat-at bar). I had a countertop made, but you could use any stock tabletop that is the right size, attached with angle brackets. The back of the cabinets are unfinished, so I had a piece of frosted glass cut and mounted to the back, which looks really cool and makes the island look like it's floating. Ikea Arkurum kitchen cabinets are an affordable option - they come in loads of colors and door styles, or you could save even more money by not having the doors and having open shelves.
    Have fun with your project!
