How To: Make a Bicycle Wheel Pot Rack

06.26.potrack.jpg

Pot racks are suprisingly expensive. And they're generally pretty simple, so what gives? Here's a cool DIY for making a bicycle wheel pot rack. The design keeps the wheel intact, allowing it to be rotated so you can reach pots in the back.

The look is not too bicycle-ey and the cost is a fraction of an off-the-shelf product. We actually are really digging the mechanical look of it. Brings a little Duchamp ready-made flavor to the kitchen.

Great! Just the DIY project to make my house look like a college dorm room or frat house.

Potracks are always ugly and this one is no exception. Pots should be hidden.

Just what my suburban kitchen design clients want. I'd be ruined.

I think of plenty of places where this would be a great answer, and the idea of being able to spin it is really swell.

This will look nice with my milk crate bookcase and mattress on the floor.

jeez,
what a bunch of snobs some of you are.
it's a good utilitarian, GREEN (recycling, hello?) solution to the conundrum of clutter.
sheesh.

heat getting to people? this is cool. i wonder if there's a way to get it to hang lower and still be sturdy; with high ceilings it'd be quite the jump....

I like it, it would be fun if you could swing around on it.

It wouldn't really work for me, but I think it would be a unique piece for the right space.

Dude. It's a bicycle wheel hanging from a ceiling. It LOOKS like a bicycle wheel hanging from a ceiling. And I hardly think it's snobbish to say that something in a home looks bad thats posted on a website devoted to how things look in homes.

Not only that, but once you actually use your pots a couple of times, they no longer look like the ones used in photos to sell pot racks. I agree with the guy who said pots should be hidden.

I keep my pots & pans in the cupboard, but mainly because I don't want them to get dusty and don't feel like re-washing one before I use it. My kitchen is too small to display them, anyway.

It's not my style, but I do admire the ingenuity of others, and if this works for someone else, then why not?

Someone I used to know made these and they actually were quite cool in person. I thought it was a cute idea. Not for some perfect kitchen, but worked in some quirky, cute NY kitchens I saw them in.

Yes, this is a cute idea. It's cute for 15 seconds the first time you see it: "What a cute idea. A bicycle wheel hanging on the ceiling with cooking vessels suspended from it by means of $6.00 hooks."

The next time you see it you say, "Oh, look, there's that bicycle wheel hanging on the ceiling."

The third time, you say, "Damn bicycle wheel on the ceiling.".

Goes downhill from there.

I think it's cute. Of course, it's all in how you work it, like anything. Some people look amazing in a thrift store dress, some look cheap. This idea is clever, nonetheless.

I like it. Of course, I have my two most often used pans hanging from nails next to the stove. (I'd love to have Julia Child-style pegboard if I had the right space.)

We created this pot rack and I feel I have to defend myself. Wow, some people are amazingly crude. The pot rack serves to help us fit into an small house. We don't have space to put all of our pots in cabinets. The pots in the picture do get used a lot and are not just for show like some people suggested.

As to the comments about the milk crates and mattresses on the bed. This pot rack is in a modern loft with granite counter tops and designer furniture. I like that it was cheap and green, but that is not the only redeeming quality of the piece. It works well and has simple clean lines. It has both form and function.

Mr Green every time I see it I like it more. Next time your creations are carried in a magazine feel free to let me know.

Maybe for those who don't think it has enough snob appeal you could recreate it using Mavic Ksyrium ES Tubular rims...no one would say it was cheap!

Personally, I think it's terrific.

Cheers

/off to find an old bike wheel

I just went out back and picked up the bicycle wheel that has been sitting in the lot behind my apartment. This is a perfect solution for those of us who are not so fortunate as to have the space to store our pots and pans in the teeny-tiny cupboards often found in small apartments. I'm on my way out to pick up some hooks. Thanks for the help!
