IKEA 2009 Catalog: SOLAR Beech Kitchen Cabinets

8-6-solar-beech-1.jpg

One of our favorite items from the IKEA Catalog Press Preview Party was the new line of beech cabinet fronts in the SOLAR collection. The warm-toned beech cabinets featured integrated handles and when paired with the quiet, self-closing drawers from the AKURUM base cabinet line, were truly impressive...

The SOLAR cabinet fronts are one of the most expensive cabinet front options from IKEA, because they are made with a combination of solid beech wood and beech veneer — not a foiled finish particleboard. While featured in the new catalog, the SOLAR beech option is not yet online.

Oh Wow - That's stunning, and would beautiful with simple white corian, icestone or even plain-white laminate countertops with a square edge.

Damn - I should have waited one year before my ikea kitch redo. Then again, if I did my kitch this year, I would be saying the same next year were ikea to release other door fronts.

I do loooove those cabs, though. These cabs look good even with the aluminum effect ctrtop, which is the one i have - $160 for 20 linear feet - can't beat that, and it looks good, too!

These do look nice, but after just finishing installing my own IKEA cabinets I can see a big problem for some kitchen designs - getting the grain of the wood to match and not look like a pre-fab kitchen.

The side panels come in only a few sizes and (as you can see in the second picture) are hard to match with grain and color of the wood. With my kitchen (brown Adel) I had to return a bunch of doors and side panels to get everything to match well (okay, yes I am a bit picky). However, it all depends on the kitchen design. And I love the no hardware look.

That said, for pre-fab cabinets IKEA is awesome. The hardware for doors and drawers is far superior to anything else, the designs are super functional, and if you live near and IKEA (and have a car) you can return anything that isn't perfect. I love my cabinets!

I agree these look very stylish and expensive.

Liked the white corian idea.

I also just installed my ikea kitchen (nexus black brown)... countertops were installed just this morning. (solid white corian with a dark brown sandwich edge... I'm loving it)
Anyone else with drawer base cabinets notice that when the drawers are filled with heavy utensils or appliances the drawers below them do not open and close with the same smoothness that you get in the store? My dampeners totally stopped working on the drawer below my silverware... am I missing something or is this one of the unspoken secrets of the ikea kitchen...

I was very skeptical about Ikea cabinets too until we did two kitchen remodels with them. They are extremely well made for the money. And, they look great! We used all 'Akurum' in the 'Adel birch'. We also mixed in some with glass doors.

wig3000: The alum effect ctrtops are durable. No problems with staining or water whatsoever. It was important for me that the ctrto be virtually maintenance-free.

If you have to cut the countertop length, just make sure that you coat the exposed side with a generous amount of glue before applying the cover strip along the side to ensure that water or other liquids can't seep through.

We're just putting the final touches on our Ikea kitchen plan when I came across this. Currently going with Adel Birch, but am a bit intrigued by these. Going to look into it. Thanks for making this process even harder:)

We just finished our Ikea kitchen ... used Askome Ash doors, black Silestone counters, stainless steel backsplash and 12x24 travertine tiles on the floor and we love it. We have two 36" drawers under the cooktop and keep all our pots and pans in them. Lots of weight and no problems with the dampers. teeze, maybe you have defective pieces (it happens). We also installed two 15" under-counter pantries and use it to hold our liquor bottles. Again, lots of weight and no problems.

Saw these in person at the Burbank Ikea and thought they looked really great. I really like the walnut-ty grain of the beech.

And Robbybird is right. You would probably need to over order drawer and cabinet faces in order to get the grain reasonably unified over the entire kitchen.

And for those itching to put them to use, cabinets are cabinets. You can use the shallow high cabinets for a home office, living room, garage, or bedroom storage. Just because they are in the kitchen section doesn't mean you can't put them to work elsewhere. My first thought was that they would make a great headboard/bed storage unit like the one pictured on AT Chicago a few weeks back:

We have a strange, nearly-unworkable kitchen layout that IKEA cabinets can't accommodate. I do like their styles, though. Wish they were a reasonable option for us.

I really really like these new door styles! Wow. Pretty impressive. I was just at Ikea Orlando. Too bad I didn't think to check out the kitchen department and see if they had them.

teeze,

One each side of my range I have the 36" four drawer (two big and two small) where I keep dishes, pots&pans, and utensils. I have had no problem with the weight of the drawers. That said, with the wide expanse of the larger cabinets ( I have two big 37" corner cabs, 2 36", and a 24") you may need to provide reinforcement on top. We had a Paperstone counter top installed and the installer said to reinforce the tops of the cabinets with 1/4 ply wood (i used the large side panels in the same color as the cabinets, since a little would show). He said to avoid sagging. The Paperstone is a solid 1 1/2 inches and really heavy. Maybe you have a heavy counter top that is creating some sagging? Ohh, we also take 2x2 and nailed them to the wall (studs) under the top frame of cabinets to make sure there would be no sagging, since we also installed tile for the backsplash.

RichardinLA -

I was thinking the same thing about the new cabinets. They would be awesome in the living room with built-ins and white shelves. My next DIY is to put built-ins around my fireplace. I would love to use these new cabinets, but I have a light oak floor and I think that it would be way too much busy wood. However, I am thinking about the solar white cabinets with some reclaimed wood for the top of the cabinets and shelves. I love the white/wood combo.

Geez, I love Ikea sometimes...

we saw these at the eastplaoalto store today -- they were unceremoniously slipped in next to the standard faire. they were nice, but not solid wood. the drilled backside (hinge hole) revealed particleboard like the others... they were certainly natural veneer, but veneer nonetheless. in tracing the pattern over/around the "handle", it seems as if even this area is veneered... could be wrong, though.

excellent idea on the mention above to get them out of the kitchen... a pair of fridge-top cabs (36X15X24) mounted side-by-side would yield a sweet set of 4 18X15in wide-format doors... get a few cover panels (for the top, bottom and sides) and you're set...
