One of our first furniture purchases years ago was a set of basic Metro Shelving components. The unit started off in the main room of our studio we were renting at the time. Over the years, we grew embarrassed of the open wire shelving and it was relegated to our building's shared basement storage space. This collection of Metro shelves in kitchens, however, makes us want to bring the shelves back upstairs...

one of the grocery stores i go to uses these shelves. i think they look great!

We have wall mounted Metro shelving in our kitchen. It is great for a small space with no other storage. Installed correctly they will hold a huge amount of weight.
Our kitchen has no traditional cabinets. There is only one very narrow pantry that can't even house a regular sized dinner plate. I just finished repairing the terrible wall behind the sink and stove where we are installing open shelves. The only reason for this choice is because of the width of the wall, and I would not be able to fit the metro shelves side by side. I would love to use metro there, but we have to go in a different direction. Instead, we are keeping the metro shelves that we have across our window and will be using them for plants. I love these shelves. They allow the light to pass thru and I like the look of them overall.
I also have a very old floor unit that is about four feet high. It has served me well for many, many years thru different apartments and studios. It has been used for clothing, plants, and art supplies. I've used it in the kitchen, my closet, outdoors on the porch, and in my art studio. It has been in the kitchen in this place for about a year, for dishes and the microwave. Just a month ago they were moved. They now house painting supplies in the studio room next to the easel. Just yesterday my partner cut plexi liners for the shelves to make them easier to work from while painting.
I love them and would easily purchase more if the opportunity came up.

I have a unit like the one in the orange kitchen. It's really practical since the shelves can hold so much weight and it doesn't take up as much visual space since it's so open. They're great.

I just moved to a cute little house and my washer and dryer are prett much right in the middle of my kitchen. There isn't anywhere else in the house that they can go. How can I make them fit into my cute little retro styled kitchen? I love all of these shelving ideas and the fabric cover around the shelves, but I don't think I can cover my appliances in the same way. Any suggestions?

They look OK is a garage or a corner store, but they will never be furniture.

I have three of these.
We've been remodeling our house and they have been a lifesaver. I've used them as a bookshelf, a pantry, a rolling closet, and a makeshift kitchen -we layed masonite over one shelf so we had a worksurface and a place to put the coffee pot -they just moved to whatever room we were working on. If (when?) we ever finish our remodel we can put them in the basement for general storage.

i got a white 4 shelf unit at conrans years ago - it's now in the basement, and it actually enhances the view down the stairs and gives the impression of a neat and organized space
