West Village Townhouse Kitchen by Made

Brooklyn architects Made designed the kitchen for this West Village townhouse. It's not shiny, glamorous, or eye-popping, but rather quiet, somber, and respectful of its brick and timber shell...

Some things we like in particular:

  • Age. The appearance of age in the pendant fixtures, dining table, and bar stools make for a very comfortable fit in the surrounding architecture of the home.
  • Color. The only vivid color is in the bar stool upholstery, which is beautiful against the patina of natural materials everywhere else.
  • Unfitted. The fridge is set into the niche beside the fireplace, but it's not built-in. The kitchen is made up of mostly stand-alone pieces that look like they were accumulated over time instead of fitted flawlessly at once. That imperfect quality does a lot to emphasize the space's warmth and character.

Love the beams, and it's a very interesting blue/gray color. Love the fireplace mantel as well.

I seems comfortable, lovely and long lasting. More David Weeks lighting, yey! He seems to be popping up more and more. I'm not a big fan of a flat screen TV in the dining room but to each his/her own I guess.

A Dining Table, a TV and a Fireplace in the same kitchen!

This is my dream kitchen. The brick, the fireplace, the beams, the tv... swoon. The only thing that would make it better is a couch and a better view of the tv from the kitchen.

You don't think that kitchen's "glamorous or eye-popping"? Sheesh. Tough customer.

Does Julianne Moore still live in this house? Anyhoo, I loved this issue of The World of Interiors.

The kitchen has very little natural light (a lot less than the picture suggests).

Love the barstools (any ideas on who makes them?).

Really like this kitchen, but as others have pointed out, the lack of light is a killer for me. A garden-level kitchen is very popular in London, and since I get mostly UK magazines, I am a little surprised that they didn't do the same thing as there. UK architects, who are masters of maximizing available day light, would have made the garden wall all glass -- all sliding door and window.
