Calypso Mercury Glass Lamp

10-18-calypso.jpg

We like these. We just bought two of these Mercury Glass lamps at Calypso Home for a client's living room, and feel that it adds just the right touch of brightness, curvy-ness and shine to the room. Very similar to Crate and Barrel's wonderful Orly Lamp (since discontinued) and their Haley Lamp (which is not as nice), this one is distinctive...

New mercury glass in this great gourd shape is somewhat hard to find. Martha used to sell it and the only other place we've seen some nice - smaller - mercury lamps is at Global Table.

Always a favorite of mine--and a reminder of my grandmother's sitting room, which seemed to beckon every bit of light in their house and reflect it against burnished wood surfaces and her oils. Thanks for the post; I'll ask my mother if I might have a piece and look beyond for the lamps you described.

Reflective mirror-like lamps (and everything else) seems like such a fad, one I have a feeling will be out very soon.

fad? mercury glass has been around for ages.

the silver, the sheen... it's modern and classic at the same time.

I can't find the lamp on the Calypso site. Only blankets, candles and knickknacks. How much is it?

Do they show a lot of fingerprints? Are they easy to keep clean/polished?

I LOVE Mercury glass and I'm glad to see it's being revived commercially. Mostly I see it on 1stdibs.com and we all know what that costs! Sheesh.

I am a designer for a large home decor manufacturer, and I have to tell you that though we have had much success in recent years $$$ in mercury glass, we have seen it suddenly downtrending significantly in recent months.

metallics are still hot and uptrending for home. I think this lamp falls more into Metallic and Chrome than Mercury glass anyway.

Plus you have the beutiful sea grass shade (which ties nicely into the "organic looking" trend despite the fact that is prob is not.

you have to hand it to Roost. they really design and distribute lovely stuff, and it usually is relatively timeless.

I can only imagine after what they paid for it at calypso, they hope it is going to last a while!

I think the lamp is lovely and for those of us with diminutive spaces, reflective surfaces are always welcome and fun. So trend or no trend, I'd actually prefer that something wasn't "popular" and thus i can be unique as opposed to following the herd. Whenever I see/hear of designers listing their "what's hot!" list I immediately make a mental note to stay away from said item and come back to it when it's trendiness has waned, if I really like it.

That, said, I'm a huge fan of this mercury glass look, real or not and have had my eye on these fabulous mercury glass pendants. Divine over wine.

These lamps are pretty but are sold absolutely everywhere for far less than the store you mention.
crate and barrel offers them for $59 and also one can go to roost.com and order them.
Michele Varian will offer you a fair price and order just the right size for you. they come in several sizes.

Here's another option which I think looks great and is a good price.
