Giant Task Lamp

4-2-angle1.jpg

Sometimes small is giant. We spotted a giant task lamp at the Arch Digest show in the Roche Bobois booth (below) and went looking for it online. Roche didn't show it on their website, but we found that the original Anglepoise Lamp, designed by British designer George Carwardine in 1933, was recently reissued in a giant version by Anglepoise of England. Ha! We'd found the original...

Next we found the design of the Roche Bobois lamp.

Scarcely four years later, in 1937, an even more classic version (for Americans), the Luxo L-1, was invented by Jac Jacobsen for Luxo of Norway.

This one is the one that we've all seen a hundred times and became even more famous when Pixar's first short film, Luxo Jr., came out.

FINALLY, after a lot of clicking, we found where they sell the giant version on Luxo's US website (above). Each one costs a ton, comes with a special numbered edition number, and comes in black, white and aluminum grey.

They also, at one time, were sold at the Terence Conran Shop, when they did their "scale" show.

Reminds me of the furniture F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald had in one of their homes--GIANT! Anyone sitting in one of the chairs looked like a little kid.

Does anyone know the orange chair in the last picture? It looks familiar, I just can't place it.

The one at Matter (and likely the one at Conran) is the lamp that's been making the rounds of late in editorials and at the ICFF over the past couple of years. I began searching for these giant task lamps over a year ago, and around that time found the Max Lamp only at www.Nova68.com. It has a wider 'head' and is available from Matter too, hence the display:

I love these lamps and considered buying one, but really, you need a loft for them to really work the scale properly!

Silliest looking lamp I have ever seen. No, that's not possible, but it's still an eyesore.

My too scents.
