We bought a box of shuttlecocks at a yard sale this weekend. They reminded us of Gitta Gschwendtner's shuttlecock light that we had seen last year on hautenature. We love it because its like a freeze-frame from a shuttlecock explosion. And because we love taking ordinary things and turning them into extraordinary things. Not to mention that when we talk about it, we get to use the word shuttlecock a lot....

I don't know about you all, but the badminton birdies we used in high school gym class were made out of nylon. We haven't played since, so it was amazing to buy this box of shuttlecocks made out of real goosefeathers. The guy at the yard sale told us that the goosefeather shuttlecocks are called "feathers" by badminton players. According to him, feather birdies fly faster off of the initial impact of the racket than "plastics", and slow down more at the end.

We weren't exactly sure WHAT we were going to do with these when we bought them, although now we'll keep a few to play some games. In the meantime we have this big box of goose feather shuttlecocks. We're thinking of stringing them up with fairy lights on the back deck. Any other ideas?

I might consider spray-painting them funky colors or solid silver and hanging them from my tree this Christmas.
OR putting them on a chain and giving them out as presents to best friends who would appreciate funky-colored shuttlecocks hanging from their necks. (Believe me, I have friends who would...)

What a great idea! Althouugh I usually call them "birdies" in order to avoid using the word shuttle-cock.

They could make a nice mobile or five! If you can replicate the light, that would also be amazing.

Love the light idea. You could also make a menagerie of shuttlecock birdies. A great project for Readymade mag!
