Make This Light Using Branches!

We love this DIY from the Nettleton Hollow blog. This light, which closely resembles the Bertjan Pot's Random lamp from Moooi, is made entirely of branches.

When soaked in water for a few hours, Mitsumata branches become as pliable as rubber. For this project once the branches had been soaked, they were molded around a balloon to create this fantastic light fixture.

  1. The amount of Mitsumata branches needed depends on the size of the light desired. For the light in the photo estimate about 8 to 10 bundles of the 3-4' size (you could make a light of a smaller diameter using less materials) To double-check the amount, contact Nettleton Hollow before ordering.
  2. Soak the Mitsumata for a few hours
  3. Use a balloon as a mold
  4. Use wire to secure the branches around the balloon mold.
  5. Let the branches dry, then deflate the balloon.

This project is only one of many branch-related projects on the Nettleton Hollow blog. There's also suggestions for centerpieces, candle holders, and grass arrangements.

@Eleno_Mome

The wires are used to tie the branches together.

Lovely. Except... where on earth do Mitsumata trees grow?

I agree with you. The attaching the branches together seems like it wound be tricky. It also seems like a few extra sets of hands would be helpful.

Seems like it would be really frustrating to make, but if you can put up with it, it could be really beautiful!
