NY Good Questions: Fluorescent Tube Lighting?

3.11light.jpgHello AT,

After months of enviously looking at other AT reader's remodels I'm finally renovating my own apartment.

The one detail I didn't originally give much thought to was lighting.

I was hoping to be able to go with recessed lighting and install wall washers around the perimeter.

Unfortunately, I've discovered there isn't adequate space above the ceilings for fire-rated fixtures, and the ceiling cannot be lowered enough due to the sprinkler system.

I need to make some lighting decisions fast, because I can't get the electrician to rewire until I know where the fixtures will be located...

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

I'm leaning away from track lighting, because the ceiling is already kind of cluttered with the exposed beams and the sprinklers.

Am I crazy to be considering fluorescent tubes?

I was thinking of placing fluorescent strip lights on top of the cabinets (which will come to the bottom of the ceiling beams) to provide indirect lighting, and wall mounted fluorescent fixtures on the opposite wall at the level of the ceiling beam brackets.

How would you suggest lighting this space? Track, pendant, globe? What about the entrance?

Thanks! Ansel

I think that's a brilliant idea. I've actually been considering it myself--a cheap, simple way of adding lighting and mood. You just have to make sure you use the softer, 'yellower' bulbs, not the bright white kitchen-y ones. Good luck, and post pictures of whatever you end up doing!

Of course I can't remember which magazine I saw it in, but...
Consider wall mounted uplighting - unlike the picture above where the light flows downward causing shadows, uplighting illuminates an entire room, it seems to spread light by bouncing it off the wall and ceiling. In the magazien spread, the modern home had white walls, but I'm sure it would work with any wall color. Sorry I can't be more help.

Just wanted to add that there's a few more pics on Flickr and the walls will all be painted a less garish white.
