NY Good Questions: Layout Suggestions For This Room?

7.2room2.jpgDear AT,

I recently discovered your site while searching for solutions to a curved wall.

I know very little about decorating or properly laying out a room, so I'm submitting pictures of the new apartment I moved into north of Boston to get some suggestions.

The apartment is very small and this room here is the living room/dining room.

My budget is very limited, and I mainly own second-hand or thrift store items.

At the moment that's merely an arm chair, a drop-leaf table and four wood dining chairs...

I'd like to get a coffee table and maybe a love seat, but mostly I'd like suggestions on layout possibilities.

Thanks! Kathy

What about a sofa on one wall and a chair on the other, so the curve of the wall sort of fits into the L-shape that they make when placed adjacent to one another.

You could also wallpaper the wall and make it more of an artistic focal point. You might not be able to use paste, but a stapler works pretty well and then you can take it down when it's time to move.

for that curved wall, I'd do a great piece of vinyl art--removable when your lease is up. There are lots of great modern options out there. A love seat with a corner placed chair would be cute in there.

That curved wall is crying out for some homemade fabric art. A nice piece of fabric from the store, some props for underneath to create some curves and flow, and a good soaking in some liquid starch!

Hi, this is Kathy. Thanks for the suggestions. Right now, the way it's laid out (temporarily) is a small TV and stand where the windows are and an arm chair in the middle of the room facing the windows and TV. Then against the wall where the curved wall ends is a small dining table and chairs. I know this is a bad layout, as the focal point is no longer the curved wall.

The other problem is that the radiator takes over the only other wall space in the small room.

Hi, Kathy-- Could you give us some measurements or a rough floorplan? It's hard to tell how far apart everything is from the photos.

Hi JV,

I'm at work now, but will take some measurements tonight. If I had to guess (and I'm no good at this) I'd say it was around 20 ft from windows to back wall and about 11 ft wide from radiator to the other wall.

Sorry, I suck at this. It's a small room. If it helps at all, the box in the picture of the curved wall can be seen on the same spot in the picture below (far right across from the radiator).

Thanks : )

In case anyone reads this and has good suggestions, I measured the room and it's 16 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 8.5 feet high.

Thanks!
