Quin.mgx Lamp by Bathsheba Grossman

Hole-ly moly. This lamp is tough to even believe - it looks more like a computer rendering than a manufactured lighting fixture. The Quin.mgx Lamp by Bathsheba Grossman is made using a special modeling software by Materialise, hence the .mgx file extension in the name...

12.12.quin.mgx2.jpgThe Quin Lamp isn't cheap, but it comes with a cd ROM of the .mgx file that's used to manufacture your lamp. If you ever want another one, simply provide Materialise with your disc and multiples can be produced.

The lamp's form is based on the dodecahedron. Says the designer: Mathematically, this object adds complexity to the original dodecahedron by bringing in a rotation, so that the object becomes different from its mirror reflection. It’s a symmetry that is rarely seen; in fact, I’m unable to point to another example of any man-made or natural object which has it.

Holy starfish, Batman! This lamp manages to be both modern and pre-historic all at once. I must have one!

Absolutely stunning, but I'm a little disappointed that for $2,099, it only has a diameter of 9 inches.

HIGH on the list of items I must pastiche in miniature -- just quintessentially cool.

I've been in luv with all of these since I first saw them about 5 years ago in Europe... found a place in LA that sell them.. some are somewhat pricey other much more so... still, I'm saving my mullah to buy one... torn between the Lily floor lamp or the Lotus in terra cotta color:

I absolutely love this lamp, I am one for unique pieces of art. Of course, the price tag is a little daunting!
