apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Airblade by Dyson

dyson .JPGYou know how public restrooms make the practice of drying your hands rather unsatisfying? Well, James Dyson, of the Dyson vacuum empire plans to change all that. His newest invention, the Airblade, is a sleek high-tech wonder that conserves over 80% of the energy wasted on the old hot air machine. It works through a sensor and blows room-temperature air at 400mph. You don't have to touch anything, your hands get pleasantly dried, and while all this is going on, the machine is sucking dirty bacteria out of the bathroom!

If you want to get one for your apartment, they will go on sale in the UK for about $1000. If you just want to try it out, they will also be available for lease.

Not to mention that I used one of those in Tokyo about.. oh.. 10 or more years ago. Why wait so long to copy a design? The amount of people who know you're not first to market would surely have increased.

I'm not sure I want to stick my hands in anything called a "blade."

I don't care if it's a copy or not. I'll take anything over those rolling fabric towel hand dryers. I haven't seen one of those in a while (thank God) but whenever that is the only thing available I just dry my hands on my jeans.

Yep, they've definitely been in Asia for a while, Mr. Idea-Thieving Dyson. I used to go in to the central bank in Hanoi just to wash and dry my hands--there was something incredibly satisfying about the feeling of the air jets!

Any minute now, Dyson is going to "invent" heated toilet seats with built in water jets.

I know this came out a bit after you guys commented, but you really should be more fair...remember, innocent until Proven Guilty? Here is Mr. Dyson's response:

Is the Airblade just a ripoff of the type of hand dryers they've had in Japan for years? Not at all, said Mr. Dyson. Those dryers are quite different in that they blow hot air through holes and attempt to do the same thing that conventional dryers do, only faster. They do not blow air at the speeds of the Dyson machine, and the Airblade does not use hot air. Quite different.

Next time make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
