I took this first photo a few months ago because the outside of this building at the corner of Mulberry and Houston is so textural and odd looking it just made me want to touch it.

The building was designed by SHoP Architects. Now, the real estate marketing company CORE GROUP NYC is using colored spotlights to draw attention to the luxury lofts for sale in the building.
This is so great. too bad the colors aren't going to be permanant. The texture of the building is great. Maybe not something you can see from afar, but I would touch it as often as I could.

Brilliant!!! I'm sure the brick layers were glad to do something other than the same old thing. And the colored lights are genius.

GreatFriend — these bricks were pre-fabricated panels that were installed on site.

I like how it's the developer who gets attention instead of the architect. What's wrong with giving credit where it's due?

actually, the building was designed by shop who do some of their own development, so they may have been the developer also.

it's just that their name doesn't appear in the article, which I find unethical.

All the time?? They flash, that would be awful! I saw this building last weekend by chance... it's amazing!

the daylight picture looks pretty hideous. but the night time pix are nice.

I wouldn't want to live in the building next door what with the flashing lights but the design is new and different. I like it.

I'm surprised the PDC approved it. personally i don't care for it, the "bricks" are ok, but the lights are too much for my taste. and without the lights it's nothing more than a box...

I love it - anything other than a flat wall in NYC is a welcomed sight indeed. It has been done before however - please take a look at La Casa de los Picos in Segovia:

One question though - why do the windows look as if they do not fit properly into the frames? I think it would have looked better if they were a perfect fit from edge to edge. Other than that - love it!

How fun! Complimentary to surrounding brick buildings and yet thoroughly modern.
kclara: Want to talk unfair or unethical? Contractor's names are almost NEVER mentioned in design publications, regardless of how many design decisions they were responsible for...
