Last week in LA we kept noticing nice touches in SKGR's mom's house. This one is a rug in her dining room that she made out of smaller, doormat-sized rugs. KG found this shaggy, bright blue item at Crate & Barrel a few years ago and wanted a bigger one, but they only had these. Buying 16 of them for not too much money (@ $240), she just put them on top of a rug pad where they stick fast (they only part a little bit). It's sort of the precursor to FLOR.
She soon realized another good reason for doing this: it makes it easier to clean. Olivia always lies on this one side, so she just takes these up every few weeks and throws them in the machine.

This is exactly what my girlfriend, the occasional genius, was talking about doing yesterday . . . Flor is marketing it, but some people are just ahead of the curve.
Great picture. I love the dog, with the organic California style tile and the turquoise rug and runner. Such homey Cailfornia style!
this idea is an hgtv perrenial staple, but they've never mentioned the sticky rug mat.
ps
they perennially sew them together
Another option might be to put some tape on the seams on the back to hold them together. Overall this is a terrific idea which I'm going to consider trying out.
I would be afraid to wash only a couple of them as the color may fade. I always wash pieces together, even if only one has been worn. I'd do the same, plus some rearranging when replaced on the floor, for this fun rug.
