This past weekend I visited a lovely small art gallery in Berkeley and, aside from the art, my New Yorker's eye was taken with the owner's desk. A really really simple design, with two custom "boxes" supporting a big, thick, generous piece of glass, we thought this was a great design to bookmark for the future...
The glass is about 1/2" thick and about 3'x5' in diameter. The boxes are made out of simple plywood on the sides and some kind of painted wood or melamine in the middles. I would guess the height of 30" for desk height, about 6" wide and 3' front to back for a total of 30"x6"x36".
The bases are simply boxes with no drawers, but you could design them to have drawers. Ordering glass at this dimension and thickness is easy and pretty much any glass store will do it for you. Building the boxes can either be done by yourself (:-)) or a local carpenter or cabinetmaker.
If you are looking for a desk, this is a great solution that won't cost a lot of $$ and which takes the edge off of the - usually - high tech feeling of a glass top. The warm wood and white background soften the overall design and make it a really lovely, cozy worktop.

It would be more functional if it used short bookcases as bases.

I saw this posted before and I'm still puzzling how this is a great desk design with little kids around - those glass corners are sharp. And, isn't the glass just set on top, which means it could crash and break (unless it's tempered, but it could still be knocked off)?

Thick, tempered glass is available from IKEA in their office section. It's also got rounded corners.
Over the years, my husband and I have used the glass for tops of desks and kitchen tables. It's worked wonderfully. Ikea also has office desk supports called VIKA which provide support as well as shelving.
