Look!: A Modern Nursery

10-5-lookksenia.jpg

Technically, Kid's Design Month is over, we do have a few odds and ends that we want to post. This one is a from Ksenia, who nests in a 1000 sf apartment in Canada "where our family of four works and lives." Enter here for a short slideshow of her "nursery" which includes the whole family. As she writes, "In our home, a modern nursery means a family bedroom shared by mama, papa, toddler, and baby. This is a comfy and safe place for sleeping, nursing, reading books, and storing clothing." (Thanks, Ksenia!)

I'm not a fan of the idea of a family bed. Privacy is a good thing, especially when there are toddlers around. I can't imagine how the parents get any rest (kids tend to kick, roll around and be restless when they sleep)!

I wasn't under the impression this was the main bedroom - just a loungy place to hang during the day. i mean, i would hope so since they have a gazillion (ok, 1000) square feet of home there!

Where, in manhattan, can i get a similar bamboo sheet to make a my own headboard?

Miss,
I have the same bamboo fencing. I bought it at Ikea a few years ago in the greenhouse section for about $40. However, I haven't seen it there recently so it might have been discontinued.

Do they keep that basket and wastebin (or whatever it is) on the right on the actual bed, and the little red plastic chamber pot (is that what it is) right by the bed? That's odd.

Love the bright orange & bamboo.

umm, sometimes children need to go in the middle of the night!

Otherwise, if I still-coslept, this is the way I'd do it ... very minimal and slightly near-eastern looking. Not trying to be anything it's not.

I like the creepy kid shadow in the 4th photo.

sammie - different strokes for different folks. My husband is a much more restless sleeper than my toddler!

miss - this is in fact the bedroom for the whole family, and the largest bedroom in the home. I know that 1000 sf sounds huge, but the other two tiny bedrooms are used for two home-based businesses, and the rest of the home is taken up by a combined kitchen/dining/living room and 1.5 bathrooms. I got the bamboo screen from IKEA, but I believe it's discontinued.

Sophia - the flickr set also has notes. The little basket is for clean diapers and the little metal pail is for dirty diapers - it's a mini changing station for nighttime changes so we don't have to get out of bed. Yes they are right on the bed but that's where the baby sleeps so she doesn't need much headroom. And yes that's a red potty beside the bed - 2 year olds often have to go at night.

LOVE it. I agree with nature too :)

i'm happy to see a real modern nursery with co-sleeping + breastfeeding!
a mattress on the floor was perfect for us too.
nobody falls off or hurts themselves on hard frame edges + it's great for little ones to practice crawling on + off + for somersaults + horseplay!
i was recently interviewed by hgtv on my advice + tips for setting up a "modern nursery" + i told the reporter honestly i think the baby's room should be more of a playroom + storage for their stuff, but the baby should sleep with the parents for the first couple years instead of isolated alone in a nursery. that's what worked for us.

ummmm... yeah

I have two kids, too. Why on earth would you want to sleep next to 1) dirty diapers or 2) a potty filled with pee (you must then need to go empty it somewhere in the middle of the night, so if you're up already, why not just go use the regular potty?) See - I just made your room even more minimalist!

Your bed on the floor totally makes sense to me. Our poor child has crawled off of the bed more than I'd like to admit. Families integrate their children in different ways and I appreciate your honesty. Thanks for sharing with us.

Love the wall color. Maker and name of color, please?

The wall colour is Benjamin Moore jack-o-lantern.

Kathryn - any sleep is good sleep ;-). I don't like to disrupt my kids more than necessary at night, but I do empty the potty and pail whenever I get up.

oh, and mod*mom, our mattress on the floor is the item with the *most* play value in our entire home! When the other toddlers visit they spend the whole time jumping off the windowsill onto the bed...
