Brrrrr. We spent the long holiday in Montreal and boy, are we glad to be back. We love the beautiful city, but on this trip, the weather was cold and snowy and we loved settling back into crisp, sunny NYC yesterday. Because of all the snow in Montreal, our host had us leave our boots at the front door. But check out this thoughful basketful of colorful slippers she had for us to choose from...

Hopefully, like Martha suggests, the provided slippers were new.

Were they new slippers? Or used ones?

Oh good, Montreal posts! Can't wait--I love that city!

?? I'm not understanding the concern about new vs. used. As long as the slippers are clean (i.e. freshly washed) why do they need to be new?

Hope you enjoyed your visit! Most Montrealers were a little shocked by the snow too....

I had some New Yorker friends in for the weekend as well. They were not impressed by the slushy snow, to say the least! But they were real troopers about it, and in true Montreal style we kept out the cold with copious amounts of wine.
A lot of people in Canada also bring their own slippers over to casual gatherings at friends houses, and in "holiday" season many women will bring their dress shoes in a bag to put on upon arrival. It's quite common to see a beautifully dressed girl in a great coat wearing huge winter boots, with a pair of heels to change into later!
Why did people settle here again?

I assume you wear socks in such weather?
So, what gives with the new vs used?
I had a friend from Eastern Europe sew slippers for her guests. It was a lovely touch.

Any suggestions of where I can find CHEAP machine-washable slippers to keep by my door?

Well, I've learned something about myself today. I didn't realize I had any irrational hygiene-related issues until I read this post and had to suppress a shudder at the thought of putting my feet in someone else's slippers. Come to think of it, this could explain why I love to shop for vintage clothes but never seem to buy used shoes.

one of my odd regrets about my space is not being able to have a getadansu -- to dump shoes in favor of slippers -- not to mention the top of which could be a lovely landing strip....

I'm surprized by the new vs old question doppleganger. Think of the financial and environmental cost providing new shoes for your guests.

I'm loving the Montreal posts. It's interesting to see an outsider's perspective on my city. We definitely have a style all our own.
