Am I alone in always keeping my toilet lid down?

No -- I'm fanatical about the toilet seats being down.

Always down. But that doesn't bother me about this bathroom. I like the whole thing.

Okay, these are going into my "Look Book" as a possible fix for the teeny tiny bathroom.

And we keep the lid down. The cats stand on the seat and dip their paws into the water and leave little muddy pawprints all over the seat, which is disconcerting to guests.

I *try* to keep it down. THe bathroom is so small that anything will inevitably fall into the toilet. My husband has a problem with the concept of "flush and drop" however. I don't get it.

I once heard somewhere (probably the evening news' "shocking report" that serves only to freak people out) that when you flush the toilet with the lid open, it throws out gazillions of bacteria particles/molecules into the air. And of course they had to point out that these gross particles could land on one's toothbrush and towels. Suffice to say, I was sufficiently freaked out to now keep the lid down.

That, and our cat likes to drink from the toilet too. Ewww.

Seat down. Seat down! Ugh.

For me, the big unresolved question in these pics is: Which way does the toilet paper roll? Over the top, or from the bottom?

En-tee, that totally freaked me out too, but I later read that somehow, all those germs just lurk there, en masse, and escape the second you lift the toilet lid.

We've lived this long without dying from our toothbrush, so sometimes, willful denial is the way to go.

Desk - I learned that you are supposed to put your toilet paper roll so that the paper comes over the top. Why? It shows that you are offering the paper to guests. I know, didn't make a whole lot of sense to me either. If I have guests here, they are welcome to the toilet paper no matter what way the roll is placed on the holder.
After learning this little rule, I've started paying attention to toilet paper when I am in nicer hotels. In the hotels I've been in since taking notice, they do indeed have the toilet paper going over the top of the roll.

Unless your toilet lid provides a pretty tight seal, putting it down won't do much to prevent a hypothetical spread of bacteria.

I absolutely love it! Congrats on not being afraid to use red on the walls. If I thought my landlord wouldn't object, I'd do it, too!
As for the comments about the toilet lid: I keep mine closed, not just for the bacteria issue (I keep my toothbrush in my medicine chest), but also I think it looks nicer, and an open commode is a feng shui no-no. Kudos on a great looking bath! (I do wish you'd post more photos of it, though, so we can see it all).
