We were at Le Pain Quotidien a few weeks ago and were impressed with the interior space. For an eatery that is soooo 90's and very, very beige, it is still a beautiful space, very nice to be in AND there are some exquisite touches, such as the lighting, the pointed use of color, the rustic wood furniture (wow) and this funny and effective use of bread as a menu holder. Try this at home for your next dinner party!

sorry but i'm turned off by it. food is so important so special. looking at it makes me think that many hands touched it. the busboy passes the wet cloth under it and places it down on the wet table again and again. flies are drawn to it. bread is a living thing. yeast. i like restaurants that are more respectful of food.
I do think it could be icky but it's sort of a clever use for some stale rolls to make them into placecard holders if you have some.
My wife loves their farm tables. Any good sources for something simple and oil-finished like they have?
I'm kind of with Lorraine on this point. And I hate seeing such an obvious, public waste of food. And yet... if it legally must not be foisted onto an unsuspected public as food, when it's stale, christy's got a point, because it's KIND of being recycled?
there are people starving in the world and they are using bread as a menu holder? what a turn off.
I visit PQ at least once a day for coffee. That bread is not for eating, and its probably not changed every day. (I've seen them shaving it down in the mornings.) They don't do it that way all the time, either.
They do serve bread with butter and jam but its presented on their little cutting board and in much smaller pieces. I've never seen them serve it like a hunk that you break a piece from.
This doesn't bother me as much-- nor strike me as wasteful as-- the THOUSANDS of ketchups, salt and peppers, napkins and packaged plastic knives and forks that delis and take-out places dump into customer's bags...
it's off the design subject but try their raspberry jam sometime...delicious! (you can purchase it on the way out)
