Over in the West Village, not far from our home, is a great cafe with the strongest bowls of coffee on the planet: Cafe Henri. High in the air, over the tables, hang novel lamp shades made of old folding colander leaves...
We really love the idea of taking a remarkable design - the folding colander - and highlighting the shape by adapting it to another use. In this case the leaves have been disassembled and reassembled in a number of different ways in order to create different shapes and light. The metal has also been pre-rusted to give it a more rustic look. This is a DIY enjoyment post.


Oh Mammamia on 2nd Ave between 76th and 77th has similar hanging lamps although I think they use other kitchen items in addition to colanders. Unfortunately, I can't remember what they were.
