Look!: Curvy Modern Marble Stairs

3-28-white-marble-stairs-1.jpg

Posts on unique designs and solutions for stairs are always very popular here on AT. Last month, we received a record number of visitors for Kristin's AT Europe post, London Close-up - The Amazing Staircase. While it's not nearly as storage-friendly, the marble staircase above is gorgeous and right here, in New York...

The stairs' design was based on the idea of a ribbon and connects two floors of a 12th Street penthouse designed by Gabellini Sheppard Associates LLP in collaboration with Jay Smith. The steel support system is topped with white Sivec marble.

The stairs look really cool, but they also look a little dangerous. I know that my dog would hate them and probably never attempt going up or down them.

Beautiful, fatal and a nightmare for up keep. Form follows function applies here.

Very impressive. Beautiful work of art.

However...looks like an accident waiting to happen. Does NYC not have building codes? How did this get past?

I'm guessing that it is stairs to a sleeping loft of sorts. There are a lot less regulations when it's officially only one story.

Spiral staircases.
So nice to look at.
Can't think of one advantage besides possible space-saving.
Give me a regular staircase any day.

I can see it now : me two glasses of wine these slippery marble stairs with no guardrail...
Also, I've lived with curvy stairs and they're rather annoying in real life when one is in a rush and simply wishes to go from A to Z without all these little extra steps along the way......
