Having a glass of wine last night with reader, editor and all-around-smart person Angela Matusik, who has just started Shelterrific (check it out), we came up with the idea of going back into this wonderful treasure trove of ideas that all the contest submittees have sent us and pulling out some single great ideas, some precious moments, some sweet bits. Here's the first one.
In pphilipp frugal diss diggs we noticed that he had framed paint chips as artwork.

I absolutely love it. So original, and a great way to introduce color into those "you rent, so you can't paint" apartments.

There's an artist in NYC who arranges paint chips so that their names make a poem. Frames'em and sells'em. She was in the NYTimes a couple of years ago... I forget her name.
I like this idea. After a while the apartments blend together and most of the pictures are so small you can't see this kind of detail.
I like this idea. In an effort to show a whole apartment in 5 pictures we miss these little details.
I thought this was quirky in ONE ROOM, but he had these lo-fi DIY bits EVERYWHERE, and what at first seemed novel, then started to look plain ol' cheap.
I'd do this in one room juxtaposed against something very high end.
Just my opinion.
duh. these security codes are irksome.
Is everyone who says "high end" high prole? or lower middle?
Is "juxtaposed" the new "dichotomy?
FYI - Peter Wegner, an artist who lives in New York, used to make quite large scale paintings based on paint chips. His work has changed since then. But it was very much about pure color. You can still see some of them on artnet.com

"high prole" & "lower middle"
Are those a Paul Fussell references? I love that book 'Class' - it may be a bit 80's dated, but it's a riot!
well who'd a thunk my little lo-end gimmick would warrant a sidebar?
sally, "plain 'ol cheap" is my middle name. and they look great when my bf is over, because he's totally high-end.
(btw, thanks to EVERYONE who put the comments in my thread - if you had questions, i tried to answer them)
Good call, Shauna.
And pphillipp, you are so naughty.
I noticed those and loved them! I had NO IDEA they were paint chips (of course, I never notice the eiffel towers either.) I thought the repitition with different colors was awesome. I can't imagine what you will accomplish with more cash in the bank.
ooops. The link in my previous posts goes to a poet's site. She uses paint chips as inspiration.

I often pull on a coat to discover a trove of paint chips in the pocket....
I, too, have seem them used in fairly massive, serious art pieces.
I've got a small wooden grid shelf that I use to display small things, and at the moment the back of each square niche is papered with some Ralph Lauren chips, which are oversized on nice thick paper. The color helps the objects stand out from their surroundings, and this way I get to use all the colors I thought would be impractical on a wall.
It's good to have a high-end boyfriend.
Even better to take turns.
A great idea! But agreed, if done EVERYWHERE, it would just lose it's novelty. I may try a vatiation on that for the kitchen or the bath.
I'm planning on framing Flor tile samples as art...have had that one on the back burner awhile. I've amassed quite a collection of little 3" x 3" squares...
In the original contest post, I had noticed that the green in the three frames were picked up in the granny smith apples, but didn't realize the art was made from paint chips (very cool idea, and thanks for the closeup shot, Maxwell). I also see now that the glass vase is tinted green. I like the whole package very much.
Repeating the theme a second time with framed white tiles seems fine with me. Now if it's done more than that, then the novelty might wear off a bit.
Another way to make designs/arrangements of the chips:

Ready-made magazine had a coffee table covered in paint chips. Its a great way to get exact color you want in a room.
To: EBrown & Shauna-
I love the reference to "Class"- and for the record (out of the two) I vote for lower middle... I'm thinking high prole would just say "fancy" or "realll nice" :)
Fishes Eddy has a plate pattern that goes well with the paint chip idea.
