Designer Mark Moskovitz of fiftytwothousand wrote to tell us about his new series called Future Perfect, which is currently showing at MOCA Cleveland. With Future Perfect, he's combining antiquated techniques with modern materials and technology.
We like the combination: hopefully work like this can stress the importance of traditional craft in furniture-making and design while also pushing to create greener, more productive materials.
...This initial piece in the series features all hand-cut joinery (dovetails, mortise and tenon, butterfly joints) and is constructed without powertools, glue, screws or other such fasteners. Surfaces are milled with a combination of hand-planing, draw knife, broad axe, and finished with a cabinet scraper. It is made from 100% recycled HDPE Plastic (milk jugs, etc.) and Polyester cord woven in a traditional style commonly associated with furniture caning.

Maybe the construction is cool, but to me it looks like a park bench built by a 10 year old and ugly at that.
Antiquated? It's basic joinery, and kind of sloppy at that.
