Plopped into our mailbox today - very late, but very pretty - we had to post this mini house tour and contest entry. While traditional in many ways, this is such a good example of how color transforms a space. If the walls had remained white, the space would have very little warmth or interest. As it is now, the colors are subtle, but totally welcoming. (Thanks, Jasmina!)

Why I Use Color:
I like to use color in combination with texture to elicit emotion and highlight the attributes of a room. Color is also practical - picking a theme can help a busy weekend decorator in the city by weeding out innumerable choices. We used the blue on the walls of the living room, contrasted with a white ceiling, to lend a feeling of airiness to an often cluttered space.

It's not always what's on the inside that counts. Because we have lots of windows, we were careful to incorporate the exterior views into our design process. We worked to choose colors that woul. The smooth blue and white walls provide a wonderful fighting counterpoint to the grit of the red brick walls adjacent to the living room (wall is behind the curtain). Our bedroom overlooks the treetops of Prospect Park and we were happy to keep the inherited earthiness of the two-tone walls as part of our color scheme.
Please tell us the bedroom paint color!
It's charming and very well put together. I agree that the bit of color in the bedroom added warmth to the space. I wouldn't have voted it a top contender in the color competition because it didn't show outstanding use of color compared to all the other entries. (Too much competition, sorry.) But it was very nice.
Hey Y'all,
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you all. It really is bland - exactly what we were aiming for. We're actually in the process of selling our place (in contract), so the colors and furnishings we kept in the open were our more traditional, less confrontational pieces. I wanted people to feel comfortable as soon as they walked into the rooms. This competition has inspired me to use bold colors in the foyer of the new place. I'm thinking that "lagoon" color of a previous entry, or a fuschia.
We never changed the bedroom colors (there are two to be exact), but it just worked with the green of the trees. If you love them, e-mail me and you can come and steal some off of the wall for a color match.
boring...where is the color
is it really fair that they get to enter 3 pictures, disguised as a mini house tour? no one else got to do that.
um, we're not voting ... there's no option for casting votes ... so it's ok
In the opening paragraphs provided I understand the following:
It's a late submission but something Maxwell wants to share with us since he likes how the subtle colors change the feeling of the living space. It probably isn't being accepted as an entry into the competition.

I am in love with that leather chair. I like the feeling of the space. Good job!
I like that first pic so much that I actually started breathing faster when I saw it. The other photos... not so much. The furniture's too small and oddly arranged. The couch needs to be bigger and the coffee table needs to be lower. The tiny rug could stand to be about 4 times bigger, too. But I understand that the place is being sold, and this is not neccessarily a finished/perfected apartment at the moment. Anyway, thanks for sharing and great job on the bedroom.
I adore the bathroom. And I am a big fan of using yellows and blues separately contrasting within the whole space (that's what we've done in our house). Blah color in the bedroom, but it does seem to tie together all the furniture there.
