apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! Mid-Century Modern Pup
Boston

Dog1.jpg

We have a new addition to our home—an 11-week-old French Bulldog puppy named Bacon—and he has us looking at our apartment in a whole new way...on all fours...

Dog3.jpg

We spent weeks combing the internet for modern, simple (i.e. non-ugly) dog beds for our little guy and we found quite a few but mostly at a high price point. Before we could make a decision, Bacon made up his own mind that his favorite place to sleep is on the sheepskin under our Eames shell rocker. He also likes to run and play through/under our bent plywood Mag Table. He's got us thinking that maybe what we consider good design works just as well for puppies, too.

We'll have much more on life with Bacon during Pet Month here on AT. Has your pet adopted a piece of interior design as his own?

Oh my goodness what a cute little guy, I just want to squeeze him. And Bacon is a hot name. My Pug Greta likes to lay on anything that isn't her bed. Chair, sofa, bed, rug, lap... anything but the dog bed. She's fresh like that.

Awwww.

Yes, but nothing I'm very proud of. My cat loves a beat-up old armchair, esp the back, where she likes to sleep or just sit. I want to get rid of it, but I feel bad because she loves it so much. She also loves her flat, double-wide scratcher - it's kind of like her launching pad, which has become part of the interior design.

Wouldn't you rather sleep on the sheepskin than anything created as a dog bed? I have a couple makeshift cat beds which the cat will use when she's cold (one is something called a cat pad? in a cardboard box, and the other is a pile of blankets and pajamas from my old apartment that may or may not still smell a little like my other cat, now deceased - I moved the pile as it was from the corner of my bedroom and put it in a shallow plastic bin), or she'll stay on my bed, on the pillow or on a swirl of blankets or straight on the sheets, on top of the kitchen shelves, or she really likes my chair at my desk, or the windowsill, or the wooden floor or the tile floor, which she likes when she's too hot (like the past couple days). I don't really give her any special furniture except the bin with the blankets, I guess. I finally threw out my old desk chair which was broken-armed, and broken-height-adjustment for a long time. I considered saving the seat for her, she loved the texture, but I think she really isn't concerned for a comfortable place to nap. In the cooler months, she will snuggle up in any cardboard box I don't move on right away, and I leave it out for her until it's destroyed from claws. She's really pretty good to my actual furniture that way.

Our pup (a small engligh bulldog) won't do dog beds. She pees on them or chews holes in them. The only thing she will tolerate is a plush crate liner and a blanket. She prefers laps anyway.

P.S. Bacon is super cute. We are lovers of Bullies- English and french alike!

My cat Fellini used to love the claw-foot tub at my old apartment. She was super-shy and whenever anyone came over, she'd make a bee-line for the bathroom and hide-out under the tub with her stuffed Snoopy. She also spent half her day walking (very balanced!) around and around the big rolled edge of the tub too.

bacon is super cute! it's funny how pets like furniture other than the ones you've purchased for them. my baby cockatiel, luca has a playgym. she would rather hang out on the coffee than her gym which sits on it. when I put her on the gym she would make a beeline for the ladder and climb down. it makes me wonder if I should've skipped the gym in the first place. or should I just remove the ladder.................

Congratulations! Bacon is adorable.

Our dog Pixie also likes our Ikea sheepskin. I saved a couple of thick seat cushions from the couch we replaced last year, and covered them with a slate-blue, velvet-ish contract fabric that I found at a discount fabric place on lower Broadway. Pixie likes those too. And she often chooses her crate at night, although she likes it better without a blanket or pillow. Go figure *shrug*

Our three dogs -- two chihuahuas and a cocker spaniel/beagle mutt -- love a sofa-like dog bed my daughter bought and then gave to me. She brought it to shelter her elderly blind pug, but he prefers any piece of upholstered furniture (preferably a bed), and my dogs took over the sofa dog bed.

Just brought in a little table from a relative's apt with the intention of taking to the thrift, but one of the cats claimed it. It has three open scrollwork sides. It had a folded quilt stored in it that made it like a little cat sized Chinese Opium Bed, which is the kind of bed I'd most like to have myself.

We ended up upgrading from an expensive Select Comfort queen mattress to a much more expensive Select Comfort king mattress so that our dogs could stretch out and sleep comfortably. Our puggle Chloe loves the floor cushions in our living room. She will carry either a bone or chew toy around in her mouth, whining and wimpering, until we position one to her liking so she (and her chewy of choice) can lay on it. Once she's in the perfect spot, she's content for hours on end, and we don't hear a peep from her until she's ready for a walk.

just a warning: don't let bacon into your bed. frenchies are the cuddliest little dogs ever and it will be impossible to ever get him out! (we just had to "sleep train" our frenchie out of the bed, and it was much harder on us than on him!)

enjoy his puppyhood. and for those of you who have frenchie yearnings, please research and find a responsible breeder, as they are horribly overbred and often imported as sick little pups. (/end psa).

Little baby is adorable!

But when your sweet pup starts chewing in month or so you may want to just get him something pretty basic for sleeping. He'll rip it to sheds. Young dogs need to chew, and they will go for pretty much anything they can find, including good shoes, first edition books, and beautiful carpets. You might want to pick up the sheepskin and get something chew-proof for the next couple of years. Then, when he's a little older, restore the sheepskin. For now, go for something like LL Bean, sturdy, made of canvas. He'll chew it, but you won't care so much.

While you're at it, rawhide bones, lots and lots of rawhide bones. And exercise! Young dogs need more to burn off their excess energy.

Enjoy him. When he's grown up a bit you'll be so happy you've put in the energy and time.

My lab mix Gus likes his LL Bean dog bed. However, the sizing chart is off, go a size smaller. But what does he like better? The couch. Oh, and a pile of sheets that are on the floor getting ready to make the move to the laundry room. He loves to sleep on those.
