Look! Miniature Bauhaus Buildings

International Style. This past weekend we got a chance to stroll through Matter's new Manhattan location and we spied these miniature ceramic Bauhaus Buildings. Immediately reminding us of the Delft ceramic townhomes our grandmother collected, we learned that these miniatures come from the Bauhaus Center Tel-Aviv...

We learned that Tel Aviv has the largest collection of buildings built in the International Style, anywhere in the world. Bauhaus architecture flourished in Tel Aviv in the 1930s due in great part to the fact that 17 former Bauhaus students, worked locally as architects. More information here. We had no idea!

The miniatures were $45 at Matter (though not online as of posting) and $30 from the Bauhaus Center (though unsure of taxes and shipping rates).

Alas, alack, the tower and the city hall are different scales from the rest of the buildings, making it difficult to build a village... though if one could find Delft townhouses that were also 1:270, one could have a fine time with dioramas of Post WWII urban renewal.

I have been to Tel Aviv's Bauhaus Center ( on Dizengoff Street ) and can tell: it's HEAVEN for Bauhaus-lovers !
This shop is amazing, has an big offer on books, posters, etc. on Bauhaus. They also organize ( at least: used to ) walking tours through Tel Aviv.

And, for information, in July, 2003, UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, proclaimed " The White City", the unique urban and historical fabric of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, as a World Cultural Heritage site.

A Tel-Avivian myself, I can tell you that Tel Aviv has gone completely Bauhaus crazy since the UNESCO proclamation. Fake Bauhaus buildings are popping up everywhere and anything original, whether is has been kept up or not, is selling/renting for outrageously high prices. Still, it is really amazing to live in a city full of gorgeous architecture.
