Look!: More Open Kitchen Shelving from Our Readers

Kylie's kitchen cabinets after she took off the doors. The "before" is below...

We love it. Inspired by our recent email, How To: Open Your Kitchen Shelving and Not Screw it Up, a few readers got to work and sent up pictures of their own open situations. If you have one, please send it in and we'll post it as well (to maxwell @ apartmenttherapy . com)....

FROM KYLIE:

Hi there,

Feeling inspired by your post titled 'How To: Open Your Kitchen Shelving and Not Screw it Up Email from 5.14.08' I removed my kitchen doors today. Before and after shots are attached. My before shot is from before we purchased the house. After shot is nearly our 1 year anniversary.

Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Anna's mixed shelving: here's the open side

FROM ANNA:

Hi Maxwell,

I have a combination of open (for dishes) and closed (for food) shelving in my kitchen, and I think it looks pretty swell. You probably saw it in my AT home tour earlier this year, but here are links to the photos:

Looking forward to the feature -- I'm a big fan of open shelving (for attractive things, at least)!

Take care, Anna

I love the way this looks, but no-one needs to see the sheer mess that lies behind my own cupboard doors!

I love the look - fine if you don't cook much - because when I do, I can see the film on the cupboards -- and can only imagine that all over the dishes, etc. if I didn't have everything in a closed cupboard.

I'm starting to dislike open shelving a little bit less. Well done!

AT4H, I'm actually an avid cook (that's my kitchen up there with the pale blue walls and the stainless steel countertops), and use my kitchen and stove all the time. I honestly haven't noticed a "film" on anything, and I've had open shelving for over two years now. I do have high ceilings (10'), though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

seems to me that in most situations this would just lead to a lot of dusty dishes

Yeah, always nice to incorporate a mixture of open and closed storage units in my opinion. Plates, bowls etc should be put away somewhere, but knives, pots and other such stuff can easily be kept on display with neat kitchen design solutions like these.

Does anyone have a source for sturdy open kitchen shelving?

RachWillard, I recently searched for some sturdy commercial kitchen type wall shelving. I purchased some wire shelving from this company. http://www.theshelvingstore.com/ It arrived yesterday and let me tell you I will have to figure out how to mount it without bringing down the entire wall. the brackets aren't spaced to hit a stud on both sides and even if you could only half the screws on each bracket would actually go into the stud. I think it was designed to have plywood blocking in the wall behind it. I still plan to find a way to make it work because I love the look of it.

Just wanted to add that i chose wire shelving to cut down on having it gather dust.
