Look! : MUJI Stalker

11-14-muji1.jpg

11-140-muji3.jpgWe snuck in the front door this morning. With the big, new MUJI store opening in two days (Friday, noon), we've begun staking out the store and snapping pics.

Click below for the inside...

Our version of Harry Potter, this MUJI store will *hopefully* blow away the MoMA store collection and provide us with great design at affordable prices for years to come. But for those of you uninitiated into the cult of MUJI, don't expect bright colors and loud marketing inside. It's all about simple being better than complicated, and depth in minimilism.

MOB SCENE TOMORROW AT MUJI

I can just see this place tomorrow mobbed with hipsters in their skinny-jeans, ironically retro hairdo's, architect glasses and designer sneakers.

I'm so jealous. Ironic, but my only complaint about Minneapolis is we don't get the fun big international chains until WAY later. At least we have an Ikea now...

ummm you do know tomorrow is Thursday and the place is opening Friday, soooo I don't think you'll meet any mob scene tomorrow, but hey, if you like to be first like those like those iPhone lemmings then be my guess and stay overnight.

I was just in Tokyo and made it a point to go to the flagship store. It will be totally awesome place to stock up on basics!! The prices were very good (in Yen, anyways...). It reminded me of a very nicely priced Crate and Barrel.

Will they carry clothes? I bought a bunch in Tokyo. Again, an awesome place for basics, in gorgeous earthy mutted colors. Will they adjust the clothes sizing for the american market? Because I wear US size 2 and I bought all size large clothes!!

Wish I lived closer to NY! Will there be a web shop???

Remember Conran's in it's first inception in the late 80s/early 90s? That was the place to get wonderful housewares at amazing prices. That's what this place sounds like. I'll be interested to go but think I'll wait until midweek when it's not so crowded.

frontiersperson, I'm just making an observation of the stereotypical artsy-fartsy-boho/bobo-trustfunder-NYU-art-student clones that flock to places like this. You don't know whether to tell them to get a haircut or to eat a sandwich. The look was original for, like, 11 minutes 3 years ago. Now, it's just tired.

I literally just came back from London and fell in love with this store. I'm excited that one is opening up in New York. Although, I live in the Boston area, it's closer than going to London, at least. The prices were great and I can imagine it being greater at US prices.

The first time I set foot inside a MUJI was ten years ago; I was a 16 year-old American exchange student in Japan. It was brilliant then, and is brilliant now.

But I have to second the opinion that the place will be mobbed by "hipsters in their skinny-jeans, ironically retro hairdo's, architect glasses and designer sneakers."

Sigh.

well, in soho these days, it's either the skinny-jeaned, architecty-bespectacled, sneaker-shod hipsters, or the blonded, pixie-cutted, suburban moms from whence they sprang.

all things considered, I'd rather shop with the offspring.

Why did this go from YAY MUJI! to BOO HIPSTERS!?

I guess the new trend to replace being a hipster is to be the old fart that whines about hipsters? I'd say that's much more lame.

Store sounds interesting. I will have to visit but like a few here I will wait until the hipster kids spend all their money, complain they have no money, perhaps beg and high tail it back to Williamsburg.

I am a EV resident of 9 years. Took the (L) the other day. I try to stay away at all costs. There observing, I noticed a lady with a few kids standing(the type of lady that has lived out there for years) or the type that is being pushed out by these hipsters. Point being, none of the aforementioned profile hipster got up to move. I was already standing. I mean the damn train was just packed with these people.

On the street a few months ago I actually heard one of the most bold statements in I do not know how long. A group of kids referred to the EV as West Williamsburg and that we are trying to be cool here! I was f'ing shocked. If you are btw 16-24 this need apply. Sorry to lose sight of the subject in this thread but I cannot miss out on an opportunity to bash hipster kids. I can go on and on....

I actually don't get the Muji obsession, but I'll reserve judgment til I get to the store.

Um, hejira, your retort came across even more bitter than the original comment.

Michaelc--
How old were you 9 years ago? Just curious.

other patrick, I'm so happy to hear that at least one other person hasn't drunk the muji kool-aid. When I was living in Japan I found their clothes unflattering, their pens leaky, and their snacks not very tasty. Yes, their home decor section is nice for reasonably priced basics, but is it really worth this much fuss?

I saw the Muji section at the MOMA store this past week and I don't see what the appeal is. Perhaps the big store will be more impressive.
