Look! Our New Bosch Distinctive SHU43C0 Dishwasher

2005_3_16_bosch.jpgThis just in. So we were sitting around this weekend lamenting that the dishwasher was literally and finally on its last legs. The soap wasn't popping out of the holding mechanism anymore, there were spots on all the glasses. What were we going to do?

First stop: Consumer Reports, where we discovered that the top ranked dishwashers were Bosch and one - the Distinctive SHU43C0 - was only $580 and second to the best (most of the tops ones were over $800).

Second stop: the web to see what actual prices would be, on this machine as well as on another highly rated one, The Kenmore (Sears) 1603, which was a Consumer Reports Best Buy.

We found that most pricing for these machines would add up to well over $725 if we went with stainless steel and added tax and delivery.

Third stop: we emailed Levi Capland and asked him if he could sell us this machine and how much it would be. He returned our email the next day.

Total price? $646 (with tax, stainless steel and delivery).

Fourth stop: our office. The Bosch arrived yesterday. Done. MGR

Maxwell. This is exactly the dishwasher I have in my kitchen... (yeah, the Buddha-licious LA bachelor pad kitchen from the contest). You will love it! Not only is it energy-efficient with 4 different wash cycles, it is so incredibly quiet--even on the power-scrub cycle. Great design, too!

So did I hook up MRG with a good deal?

Speaking of dishwashers...Does anyone have any advice on that of the "portable" variety, i.e. those that do not require permanent installation?

There is not much of a variety. I used to sell the by Danby but between you and me (and everyone else) your better off doing your own dishes.

SKGR here... writing to you on assignment out at a dairy farm in rural New Jersey. Well, this is news to me - we have a new dishwasher?!

What? SKGR didn't know about the dishwasher? Oh, Oh, Max is in trouble!!!

Oh believe me, SKGR is very happy that MGR took care of the dishwasher problem. He is in no trouble at all!

SKGR, I'm sure you're happy about it. Just trying to tease MGR.

Has anyone actually used that portable clothes washer that avanti [I think...] makes? I'm thinking about getting one, since I do a lot of handwashing...

I have had a portable dishwasher from Sears for about three years. I do not roll it around, but in my rental house there is exactly enough room for the smallest one (18") in a space between the counter and the wall less than two feet away from the sink. So I just hook the hose up every night to the faucet to wash the dishes.

I took off the wheels so it would be the same height as my counter, changed the front panel to almond to match my other appliances (horrid, I know, but it's a rental), and it looks built in. The top is formica like my countertops, but a different pattern, so I keep my beverage station (coffee maker, tea bags, sweeteners, etc.) on top with a decorative cloth underneath so you don't see the pattern. People are shocked when I lift the hose off its hook behind and show them it is a portable.

It works wonderfully as long as I use good dish detergent such as cascade multi-action or whatever it's called. But I am quite the pre-rinser so your mileage may vary. Perfect size for two people as well, I used to never run my full size one at my apartment because I felt like it took a week to fill it up and who wants dishes to stay dirty that long. Yuk.

Another selling point for me is that there are instructions on how to plumb it in in case I bought a place and still wanted to use it. However, it looks like the next place will be a rental that comes with a dishwasher, so I guess I'll be storing it or selling it come summer.

I love it and would recommend it to renters with space to keep it in, but I know it would irritate me to no end if it was just rolling around in the kitchen or pushed up against a wall looking unsightly.

Anna

PS- This appears to be the one I have but I am at work so can't confirm.
