Dept. of Solutions. After posting the Glasklasen Chandelier yesterday, we recieved this email from Shannon:

I can't afford crystal--which is just as well--so I made this chandelier out of styrofoam cups.

Well done.

It reminds us of what others have done with this disposable medium, including Paul Cocksedge, who was nominated for Design Museums Designer of the Year prize in 2004. MGR

The lamp is loveley. Jonathan Adler's soho store has pretty much the same lamp though surprisingly they have let the cups get kind of dirty.

Go, Shannon. DIY rocks. I actually like your ceiling-mount version better than the ones at the Adler stores.

So easy to make--you just need a glue gun. Styrofoam is forgiving, in that it bends, and merciless, in that it lasts for 500 years. I haven't seen the Adler ones--I got the idea from my girlfriend, who said her grandmother used to have a "Dixie cup lampshade." I'm not surprised they get dirty, because styrofoam is a great source of static electricity. A "We are happy to serve you" paper cup shade is next.
